Job Overview

The Center of Hope Program Custodian is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and upkeep of the facility under relevant standards, managing access to the premises, supporting security during meal services, and assisting with food preparation and transportation in coordination with the Food Services Coordinator.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare meals, including special dietary options, as directed.
  • Ensure food service activities are performed efficiently and follow policies regarding donated food handling.
  • Collect and organize food donations and supplies, including pickup and order placement as needed.
  • Maintain kitchen, dining, and food storage cleanliness and sanitation, including equipment cleaning and waste disposal.
  • Manage general janitorial duties such as floor cleaning, restroom upkeep, window washing, dusting, vacuuming, and furniture arrangement.
  • Handle garbage and recycling properly, ensuring containers remain clean and the external property is kept tidy, including snow and ice removal and litter collection.
  • Restock supplies in washrooms and kitchens and maintain orderly storage areas.
  • Set up and dismantle furniture for special events and sanitize dining areas daily.
  • Perform security duties by checking doors and windows, allowing access, and overseeing safety during lunch programs.
  • Report safety or repair concerns promptly to supervision and assist with volunteer coordination when necessary.
  • Safely manage hazardous materials and arrange for disposal of unusable items per policy.
  • Participate in maintaining the Family Services Area and Meal Center orderly and clean.
  • Adhere to health, safety, and environmental practices including Universal Precautions and Food Safe standards.
  • Engage in monthly workplace inspections and complete required safety and refresher training post-hiring.
  • Respond empathetically to guests and maintain high personal hygiene standards.
  • Lifting and moving heavy objects regularly, with ability to handle items over 40 pounds.
  • Perform minor financial duties like small cash handling and resource usage responsibly.
  • Demonstrate various manual and technical skills including equipment use and safe chemical handling.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (alternative education and experience considered).
  • Essential certifications such as First Aid, Food Safe Level 1, and criminal record check.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Immunizations including Hepatitis B and Tuberculosis vaccination required.
  • At least one year of related work experience.
  • Strong team collaboration, interpersonal skills, and a proactive approach to tasks.
  • Capability to safely undertake physical workload including frequent lifting and use of fine motor skills.
  • Training commitments include WHMIS, Universal Precautions, Naloxone administration, and other mandated programs.

Working Conditions & Additional Information

  • Work sites include the office, Center of Hope, and Evergreen Shelter.
  • May encounter challenging situations such as unpleasant odors, noise, temperature changes, and exposure to infectious diseases or hazardous chemicals.
  • Requires dealing with aggressive individuals, emergency situations, and exposure to pests or animals.
  • Expected to participate in maintaining a safe and healthful environment complying with environmental conservation policies.

Compensation

The salary range for this role is between $19.37 and $19.97 per hour, with actual placement within the range depending on candidate experience, skills, and organizational equity. Reasonable accommodations are offered upon request.
