The Shift Leader will take charge of store operations during shifts, guiding a team to maintain a clean, well-stocked store that exceeds customer expectations. With customer satisfaction as a top priority, the role requires ongoing coaching and feedback to elevate service quality. A hands-on approach is essential to understand store performance deeply and drive effective improvements, while ensuring a safe environment for both staff and shoppers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate the team to provide an effortless shopping experience in the community.
  • Oversee store opening and closing procedures, covering duties to ensure decisions benefit customers, colleagues, and maintain safety.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for day-to-day operational queries in the Store Manager's absence.
  • Assist the Store Manager in organizing seasonal, community, and charity events to foster an inclusive atmosphere.
  • Ensure the store remains clean, orderly, and visually appealing consistently.
  • Prioritize restocking products important to customers.
  • Maintain accurate point of sale and shelf edge labeling to reflect high standards.
  • Promptly address overcharging issues and implement measures to prevent recurrence.
  • Manage customer queues proactively to guarantee a positive shopping journey.
  • Schedule colleagues effectively to align with trade patterns, ensuring timely breaks and delivery of daily priorities.
  • Apply deep knowledge of the store’s workings to lead improvements practically.
  • Adhere strictly to health and safety protocols and ensure compliance among colleagues.
  • Communicate effectively with the team to keep them well-informed.
  • Identify operational simplifications and discuss these with the Store Manager.
  • Maintain customer-first mindset in all activities.
  • Be readily available to resolve customer inquiries, ensuring their satisfaction.
  • Tailor service to meet individual customer needs.
  • Recognize and celebrate colleagues who provide excellent service.
  • Identify and help eliminate obstacles that interfere with service quality.
  • Resolve colleague concerns during the Store Manager’s absence or escalate as necessary.
  • Ensure appropriate staffing levels and actively arrange cover for absences or sickness.
  • Act as a verified Keyholder, responding to alarm call-outs to maintain store security.
  • Monitor and act promptly on internal communications, keeping staff informed.
  • Manage colleague coordination to meet operational and customer demands, providing feedback to the Store Manager on team issues.
  • Balance time spent between customer service and stock replenishment areas.
  • Support absence management, including conducting return-to-work interviews and applying One Stop absence policies.
  • Build meaningful relationships with Area Managers and People Partners to escalate issues and benefit from coaching.
  • If the store features a Post Office Local, manage its day-to-day functioning, contingent upon passing Post Office financial and criminal background checks.

Required Skills and Attributes

  • Clear and effective communication skills.
  • Strong customer focus and service orientation.
  • Effective problem-solving abilities.
  • Team coordination and leadership skills.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Basic technical proficiency relevant to store operations.
  • Efficient time management capabilities.
