Role Overview

As a Senior Transport Inspector based in Cairns, Queensland, you will lead a team of Transport Inspectors while actively engaging in frontline duties to enhance the safety of light vehicle road users. This role merges hands-on compliance activities with leadership responsibilities and strong customer service, exemplifying professional standards daily.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and oversee staff recruitment, performance evaluation, training, development, and foster ethical conduct and sound decision-making.
• Manage resources to ensure workplace safety and health in compliance with WHS legislation, policies, standards, and risk management guidelines.
• Provide expert advice, training, and education to the public, industry stakeholders, and government bodies to promote road safety and regulatory adherence.
• Plan, lead, and coordinate operational initiatives including vehicle inspections, audits, investigations, and intelligence gathering to bolster compliance results.
• Administer operations, rostering, and budgeting while recommending strategies to achieve performance goals efficiently and cost-effectively.
• Conduct inspections, roadside compliance checks, audits, investigations, and oversee accreditation procedures.
• Monitor compliance patterns, uphold quality standards, and contribute to policy development and legislative enhancements.
• Handle regulatory decisions and enforcement actions, approve exceptions, coordinate follow-ups, and represent the Department in legal proceedings as necessary.
• Prepare comprehensive reports, correspondence, and operational documentation with high quality standards.

Candidate Profile

Mandatory Qualifications and Conditions

• Possession of a current, unrestricted ‘C' class driver licence.
• Successful completion of traffic and criminal background checks as part of selection.
• Completion of a psychometric assessment for shortlisted candidates.
• Preferred candidates must undergo pre-employment medical and health examinations.
• A six-month probationary period applies for new permanent Queensland Government employees.
• Comprehensive on-the-job training is provided including education on vehicle inspections, audits, and investigations.
• Mandatory completion of the Transport Inspector Recruit Course (TIRC), a structured training and assessment program.
• Authorized appointment as an Officer and Person (without restrictions) following TIRC completion, enabling full Transport Inspector duties under relevant legislation:
  • Transport Operations (Road Use Management) Act 1995
  • Tow Truck Act 2023
  • Transport Operations (Passenger Transport) Act 1994
