Transport Inspector

Position Overview

As a Transport Inspector, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety of light vehicle road users by performing frontline duties and facilitating compliance with transport regulations through education, public engagement, and, when necessary, enforcement actions.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide clear guidance, education, and training to the general public, industry participants, and governmental bodies about applicable legislation, standards, and procedures promoting road safety and compliance.
• Conduct roadside compliance inspections, audits, and preliminary investigations focused on light and passenger vehicles, responding to complaints and identifying potential breaches.
• Perform frequent light vehicle inspections using specialized equipment to verify compliance.
• Carry out targeted audits of individuals and operators, propose education or further investigative actions, and administer enforcement when warranted.
• Maintain comprehensive and accurate records and documentation. Prepare evidence briefs and offer knowledgeable recommendations to Senior Transport Inspectors regarding enforcement outcomes.
• Enforce regulations by issuing Penalty Infringement Notices and representing the Department at hearings concerning offenses when required.
• Contribute to the development of compliance strategies, including suggesting modifications to legislation, policies, and procedures.

Mandatory Qualifications and Conditions

• Possession of a current unrestricted 'C' class driver licence is required.
• Successful candidates will undergo traffic and criminal background checks during selection.
• Shortlisted applicants must complete a psychometric evaluation.
• Preferred candidates will participate in a pre-employment medical and health assessment.
• Employment includes a six-month probation period applicable to new Queensland Government permanent employees.
• Comprehensive on-the-job training will be provided covering vehicle inspections, audits, and investigative procedures.
• Completion of the Transport Inspector Recruit Course (TIRC) is mandatory, which qualifies individuals as Authorised Officers and Authorised Persons, enabling full execution of Transport Inspector duties under specific Queensland legislation.

Desired Qualifications and Experience

• Relevant credentials or experience in auditing, investigations, and/or mechanical knowledge that supports vehicle inspection and evaluation efforts.
