Role Overview

As a Senior Backend Engineer at Apollo, you will play a pivotal role on a dynamic, cross-functional team responsible for crafting scalable backend systems within an AI-native engineering environment. Your day-to-day tasks involve collaborating with various departments such as design, front-end, analytics, and product to tackle complex challenges and deliver high-quality software. You will mentor peers, contribute to team culture, and continuously pursue performance excellence and automation opportunities.

Primary Responsibilities

• Create robust, highly available backend services with diligent monitoring and alerting.
• Quickly familiarize yourself with large and complex codebases, minimizing risks and ensuring confident deployment.
• Integrate AI as an essential component in development workflows, rigorously validating outputs and guaranteeing quality.
• Manage the full software development lifecycle—from requirements gathering and system design to testing, deployment, and long-term maintenance.
• Address ambiguous problems, formulate clear design documentation aligned with actual product needs.
• Collaborate closely with product managers to translate business objectives into technical implementations and provide data-driven feedback on product specifications.
• Mentor team members, promoting best practices and knowledge sharing.
• Communicate progress clearly with product leads, engineering managers, and other stakeholders.
• Introduce and advocate for new technologies and innovative ideas that bring tangible value.
• Participate actively in scrum ceremonies, offering constructive technical and behavioral feedback, and fostering team collaboration.

Key Qualifications and Skills

• Minimum of five years in backend software development with at least three to four years in senior roles, adept at constructing large-scale systems with effective observability.
• Strong foundation in computer science principles, including data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design.
• Expertise in utilizing AI tools as a core part of development, with the ability to critically assess and verify AI-generated results.
• Proven experience with distributed web application development.
• Ability to produce clear, maintainable, and high-performance code.
• Proficient in database schema design, comfortable with SQL and NoSQL databases.
• Experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs.
• Essential qualities include curiosity, strong problem-solving skills, AI-native engineering judgment, and excellent communication abilities.
• Desirable qualifications include a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or related fields, and familiarity with GCP, Kubernetes, Docker, MongoDB, Redis, Ruby on Rails, Microservices architecture, and Machine Learning concepts.
