Senior Software Engineer

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Terminals Team at Tait Communications based in Christchurch, New Zealand. This team comprises approximately 30 software developers and testers responsible for delivering software that powers mission-critical radio communication solutions globally. Our products serve emergency services, utilities, and enterprise organizations, ensuring dependable connectivity when it matters most.

This position is suited to an experienced embedded software engineer with deep enthusiasm for wireless technologies such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, keen on tackling intricate technical challenges. In this role, you'll contribute significantly to the advancement and refinement of the connectivity platform supporting our next-generation mobile and portable radios.

Working across all layers of embedded firmware with a focus on platform development, you will help deliver and sustain reliable, secure, and high-performance wireless solutions, impacting products used in demanding operational environments. You will be part of a collaborative, technically excellent team dedicated to innovative solutions that maintain critical communication links.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, design, and maintain embedded firmware tailored for mobile and portable radio devices.
• Implement and support Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity solutions, focusing on integration, optimization, and enhancing features.
• Participate in evolving platform software, connectivity frameworks, and core firmware components.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex connectivity and system-related issues within the software stack.
• Support integration of wireless communication technologies, audio systems, and peripheral devices.
• Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams for new feature delivery and product improvements.
• Drive initiatives for software quality enhancement, improved development methodologies, and technical processes.
• Contribute strategically to the future development of wireless connectivity capabilities in our products.

Candidate Profile

• Demonstrated experience in embedded firmware development for commercial products.
• Proficiency in C and C++ programming languages.
• Experience with embedded and real-time operating system software development.
• Practical knowledge of Bluetooth and/or Wi-Fi protocols, including integration, troubleshooting, and performance tuning.
• Strong grasp of wireless communication fundamentals, networking concepts, and embedded system architecture.
• Adept at debugging, problem-solving, and proficient software design skills.
• Experience operating within multiple levels of a software architecture, from platform-level codes to application layer functionalities.
• Ability to work collaboratively in an agile setting with cross-functional teams.
• Familiarity with radio communication systems, device drivers, or low-level hardware-related software development is advantageous.
• Excellent verbal and written communication capabilities.
