Role Overview

We seek an enthusiastic Backend Software Engineer to join our Pricing Core team. This team is responsible for developing and maintaining the primary pricing platform that supports product pricing at Wise with reliability, scalability, and flexibility. Our platform handles over 100 million requests daily and is integral to critical product operations, operating under stringent service-level agreements.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and support backend services primarily coded in Java with Spring Boot, deployed on AWS cloud infrastructure.
• Create and sustain event-driven architectures using Apache Kafka to process asynchronous financial events across distributed systems.
• Drive architectural decision-making with a focus on service quality, dependability, and observability.
• Detect and fix system bottlenecks, scalability challenges, and technical debts.
• Engage in on-call rotations to monitor and rapidly respond to incidents affecting Tier 1 critical services.
• Perform thorough code reviews to ensure team adherence to quality, security, and engineering standards.

Candidate Profile

Technical Expertise:

• A solid history in engineering complex software projects in demanding production environments.
• Proficient in Java or comparable object-oriented programming languages.
• Capable of designing for sustainable iteration and scalable architectures.
• Responsible for system availability, security, and reliability following best engineering practices.
• Adept at balancing speed, scalability, and risk to maintain predictable delivery cycles.

• Comfortable navigating ambiguous, complex challenges independently.
• Owns project technical roadmaps and executes deliverables with long-term accountability.
• Utilizes data to prioritize and evaluate initiative success.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with pricing systems, payments, or finance-related domains.
• Knowledge of distributed SQL engines such as Trino.
• Capable of building software, APIs, and tooling on big data pipelines and analytics platforms.
• Comfortable working within configuration-intensive domains integrating business logic between data and code.

Compensation & Benefits

• Competitive starting salary ranging from £87,500 to £111,000 annually plus Restricted Stock Units (RSUs).
