Role Overview

As a Backend Software Engineer at Wise, you will play a vital role in developing a new global financial network by building and enhancing systems related to partner pricing and billing. Your contributions will impact automation, compliance, and financial integrity across our partner ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop automation and centralize processes across partner pricing and billing platforms.
• Create and improve reconciliation systems to ensure accuracy in partner pricing and billing.
• Implement automated controls to support compliance and maintain financial accuracy.
• Design secure, scalable solutions that address complex partner requirements with long-term architectural foresight.
• Deliver end-to-end features for pricing and billing services.
• Participate in architecture decisions and conduct code reviews to enhance system quality, reliability, and monitoring.
• Enhance the resilience and scalability of systems supporting financial operations and external partners.
• Utilize event-driven architectures such as Kafka, alongside MongoDB and MariaDB, to build auditable and high-performance systems.
• Incorporate AI tools into development workflows to improve delivery and code quality.

Qualifications and Skills

• Solid foundation in software engineering with a record of impactful project contributions.
• Proficiency in Java or similar object-oriented programming languages.
• Capability to design scalable systems with safe iterative development.
• Responsible for system availability, reliability, and security within your team.
• Good judgment balancing delivery speed, scalability, system resilience, and safety.
• Pragmatic approach to managing technical debt and assessing risks.
• Commitment to best practices in observability, security, testing, and responsible data/event handling.
• Ownership mindset with ability to take projects from design through production.
• Clear explanation of technical decisions focused on addressing business or partner challenges and expected outcomes.
• Long-term system ownership with collaborative efforts to eliminate single points of failure.
• Active participation in incident handling and post-incident reviews.
• Dedication to consistent delivery and maintaining a healthy engineering pace.
• Willingness to contribute to on-call support as required.
• Effective communication and collaboration across teams to achieve shared goals.
• Mentorship and support for fellow engineers, including onboarding support for new team members.
• Promotion of collaboration to reduce duplicated efforts and improve mutual understanding.
• Engagement in company-wide engineering communities and participation in the hiring process.

Preferred Experience

• Background in payments, fintech, billing, or regulated financial domains.
• Experience with B2B integrations or external partner workflows where accuracy and auditability are crucial.
• Familiarity with compliance, audit, and regulatory frameworks.
• Knowledge of event-driven system architectures, reconciliation processes, or configuration-heavy environments.

Additional Information

Currently, applications are only considered from candidates local to London, as relocation assistance is not offered. Visa sponsorship transfers are supported for eligible local candidates.

Compensation and Benefits

• Starting salary ranges from £87,500 to £111,000 annually, plus Restricted Stock Units (RSUs).
