Role Overview
Join Collins Aerospace's Applied Research & Technology team as a Senior Research Engineer specializing in Electrical Systems. This hands-on research leadership role focuses on advancing the future of aerospace through innovation in hybrid and electric propulsion, electrical power architectures, and safety-critical electrical systems. Located onsite in Cork, Ireland, you will collaborate internationally to develop technologies that progress from theoretical concepts to practical aerospace applications.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and provide technical expertise in research projects related to high power density power electronics, converter design and control.
- Design and analyze electrical power distribution systems with emphasis on redundancy, fault isolation, and safety compliance.
- Conduct electromagnetic interference analyses and develop filtering and magnetic components.
- Implement converter and motor drive control algorithms on digital signal processors (DSPs) and field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs).
- Investigate high-voltage phenomena, including arcing, partial discharge, and environmental effects such as altitude-related challenges.
- Contribute to aerospace electrical system architecture development and certification processes.
- Develop technology research plans, design and test hardware prototypes, and create control strategies within deadlines and budgets.
- Translate complex technical concepts into clear documentation and presentations for senior stakeholders.
- Collaborate with academia, government bodies, and industry to support funded research initiatives and technology roadmaps.
Candidate Profile
- PhD in a relevant field preferred; alternatively, a Master's degree with substantial related experience (minimum 3 years) in electrical systems or power electronics.
- Expertise in electrical systems, power electronic converters, high-voltage technology, and control system implementation.
- Hands-on experimental skills with enthusiasm for laboratory research and prototype development.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within diverse, international teams.
- Excellent communication skills suitable for technical and cross-disciplinary audiences.
- Willingness to challenge norms, explore novel ideas, and expand beyond core competencies.
- Experience in aerospace, electrified propulsion, or certification processes is advantageous but not mandatory.
