Job description
About the Role
We are partnered with a well-capitalized UK-based deep-tech company that is pioneering a proprietary photonic computing platform engineered for high-performance, privacy-focused workloads. They seek a Senior or Principal Compiler Engineer to architect and develop a new compiler stack tailored to their innovative hardware design. This role involves bridging compilers, machine learning frameworks, and hardware to translate complex, high-level tasks into optimized code suitable for their exclusive execution environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect and develop foundational components of a novel, ground-up compiler stack.
- Create and enhance intermediate representations (IR), lowering pipelines, and transformation passes.
- Design and implement hardware-conscious compiler optimizations.
- Integrate compiler technologies with frameworks such as Google HEIR, PyTorch, and ONNX Runtime.
- Convert high-level workloads into efficient, executable code for an innovative accelerator architecture.
- Collaborate closely with teams specializing in hardware, simulation, cryptography, and algorithm design.
- Conduct benchmarking, profiling, and debugging of compiled workloads to ensure performance and correctness.
- Contribute to defining the technical vision and software architecture of an expanding platform.
Required Qualifications
- Advanced practical experience in modern C++ programming.
- Direct hands-on involvement in compiler development, focusing on intermediate representation, middle-end, or back-end processes.
- Familiarity with MLIR, LLVM IR, or other compiler intermediate representations and associated frameworks.
- Deep understanding of compiler passes, code lowering techniques, optimization strategies, and code generation.
- Proven experience targeting processors, accelerators, or custom hardware architectures.
- Strong interest in hardware-software co-design and delivering production-ready systems.
Additional Information
This position provides a unique chance to build and influence a compiler system aligned with truly novel hardware technology, shaping the software foundation from an early phase. Preference is given to candidates based in Bristol or willing to work remotely within the UK; exceptional applicants from other parts of Europe will also be considered.
