Role Overview

We are seeking a Senior Financial Accountant based in the Dunedin city office, New Zealand, to join our finance team during a period of sustained growth. Reporting to the Superintendent – Financial Control, this role involves delivering accurate financial accounting, statutory reporting, tax compliance, audit readiness, and regulatory adherence for OceanaGold New Zealand. The position includes ownership and management of critical financial controls under a SOX-compliant framework, including ensuring control effectiveness, quality documentation, issue resolution, and continuous improvement of accounting processes and reporting systems.

Work Schedule

The position follows a 9-day fortnight roster pattern: 5 days on, 2 days off, then 4 days on, 3 days off, working 7:00 am to 4:30 pm shifts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in month-end closing activities including journal preparation, posting, and review within the Pronto ERP system for New Zealand entities.
  • Provide financial accounting insights and support to management accounting teams to enhance the accuracy and consistency of operational financial information.
  • Prepare and review complex financial transactions and accounting models with thorough technical justifications and comprehensive supporting documentation.
  • Review and assist with balance sheet reconciliations, ensuring timely completion and proper certification within Blackline software in coordination with finance colleagues.
  • Support income tax calculations, provision preparation, filings, and related documentation, collaborating with Group Tax and external consultants as necessary.
  • Contribute to finance system upgrades, process improvements, and control enhancements as a key finance team member.
  • Take ownership of key financial controls, ensuring they are properly operated, evidenced, auditable, and aligned with SOX compliance, group policies, and audit standards.
  • Provide senior-level technical accounting expertise within the finance group.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor of Commerce degree in Accountancy or equivalent field.
  • Chartered Accountant qualification or equivalent professional certification/experience.
  • Valid full New Zealand driver’s license.
  • Unrestricted and immediate legal right to work in New Zealand.
  • Over five years of financial accounting experience in a large or complex organization.
  • Proven track record in month-end closes, financial accounting, income tax compliance, balance sheet oversight and internal control responsibilities within a large or publicly listed company.
  • Experience operating under SOX or equivalent regulatory control environments, including audit preparations, control testing, and issue remediation.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, including complex reconciliations, financial modeling, pivot tables, formula usage, and data analysis to support statutory reporting and audit requirements.
  • Experience with ERP and consolidation systems such as Pronto, OneStream, or similar platforms.
  • Experienced in supporting finance transformation initiatives and process improvements within management or operational finance teams.
  • Desirable: Background in extractive industries, industrial sectors, or other asset-intensive environments.
