Opportunity Overview
Based in the scenic Otago region of New Zealand, the Senior Geologist position at Macraes Open Pit offers an excellent chance to maintain work-life balance amid breathtaking landscapes. This role follows an 8-days-on, 6-days-off daytime roster and involves overseeing geological operations to maximize ore extraction and gold output. The role is a residential, drive-in, drive-out position accessible from Dunedin or Oamaru, with Queenstown accessible within three hours for recreational pursuits.
Responsibilities
- Optimize geology resources including managing contractor drilling to align with mining schedules.
- Utilize industry best practices to precisely define ore zones and reduce dilution.
- Maintain up-to-date and reliable resource and geological models.
- Carry out monthly reconciliations to validate performance.
- Supervise and assess grade control models and ore blocking accuracy.
- Apply appropriate management procedures when overseeing personnel, adapting to varying contexts.
- Mentor junior geologists by sharing expertise and building team capability.
- Lead efforts to foster continuous improvement and a positive, performance-driven culture.
- Develop succession plans by coaching and supporting team members to expand their knowledge and skills.
- Cultivate effective communication and engagement to maintain a motivated, high-performing team.
Qualifications and Experience
- A tertiary degree in Geology is required; advanced qualifications (Honours or postgraduate) are highly valued.
- Valid current driver license is mandatory, with manual vehicle driving skills preferred.
- At least eight years of post-degree experience, preferably in production or exploration geology.
- Demonstrated knowledge of open pit and/or underground mining environments.
- Experience in supervisory roles is favorable.
- Strong practical understanding of geostatistics.
- Proficiency in mining-related software and databases is essential.
