Role Overview

The Senior Engineering Manager will lead the Frontend Platform and Navigation teams within the Grafana Frontend group. These teams focus on enhancing user experience aspects—spanning dashboards, visualizations, navigation, search, and sharing—and developing foundational tools for engineers and community contributors. This role is accountable for team performance, delivery outcomes, and driving customer value.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage two distributed engineering squads, setting clear expectations, providing coaching, delivering feedback, and cultivating a culture of accountability.
• Oversee recruitment and capacity planning to align team skills with product goals and long-term strategy.
• Lead discovery processes by engaging with customers, internal stakeholders, and the community to guide roadmap prioritization.
• Collaborate with Product, Design, and engineering leadership to balance priorities, dependencies, and technical trade-offs.
• Ensure on-time delivery by setting milestones, identifying risks early, and intervening to maintain commitments.
• Leverage AI regularly in management tasks to synthesize insights, optimize decision-making, and improve coordination.
• Promote adoption of AI and automation across engineering workflows to enhance productivity, quality, and efficiency.
• Define engineering direction for frontend foundations including developer experience, accessibility, architecture, tooling, reliability, and multitenancy.
• Establish technical leadership for navigation, search, and resource organization features, incorporating AI-assisted discovery where applicable.
• Maintain high standards in quality, security, and operability, particularly regarding AI-assisted work validation.
• Drive initiatives to improve engineering effectiveness and business impact across products and R&D.
• Participate in the engineering management on-call rotation, coordinate incident responses, and use Grafana’s AI capabilities for observability and investigation.

Candidate Profile

• Extensive experience managing senior engineering professionals, fostering technical leadership, and addressing team performance proactively.
• Strong understanding of web and frontend technologies to actively contribute to architectural and engineering quality decisions.
• Proven ability to clarify ambiguous problems into prioritized actions with measurable outcomes while managing operational pressures.
• Excellent product sensibility, connecting engineering efforts to user needs and business goals.
• Effective communication skills suited to remote, international teams.
• Familiarity and appreciation for open-source development and the balance between cloud-first delivery and community requirements.
• Practical knowledge in using and integrating AI tools within leadership and engineering workflows.

Additional Assets

• Experience with React, TypeScript, or similar large-scale frontend frameworks.
• Background leading developer platform teams, including plugin or extension support.
• Expertise in navigation, search, information architecture, or resource management systems.
• Experience managing multitenant SaaS products or substantial platform migration projects.
• Prior involvement in widely adopted open-source initiatives.

Compensation

For candidates based in Ireland, the base salary ranges from EUR 133,600 to EUR 160,320 depending on level, experience, and skills assessed during interviews. The package also includes Restricted Stock Units (RSUs) that provide ownership stake in Grafana Labs. Compensation ranges may differ if applying from other locations, with market-specific pay and benefits discussed during recruitment.
