Role Overview

The Senior Director, Technology Strategy, will spearhead the central technology strategy function, guiding shared technical directions that empower Seequent's product teams to develop, scale, and advance products efficiently. Collaborating closely with leaders from Product, Engineering, Security, Data, and Architecture, you will ensure strategic technology decisions, standards, and enabling services align with customer goals, delivery success, and scalability.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the creation and governance of the Technology Strategy roadmap, synchronizing with CTO’s overall vision and SVP’s investment priorities to align technology direction with company goals, product strategies, engineering needs, and delivery capacity.
• Oversee software architecture, high-performance computing, and platform data strategies to establish scalable, secure, and efficient foundations for product and platform development, enforcing mandatory standards.
• Convert strategic initiatives into actionable plans by defining reference architectures, investment themes, reusable design patterns, governance frameworks, and success metrics.
• Direct the technical integration and adoption of machine learning and generative AI capabilities across Seequent’s products and services through roadmap development, shared platform establishment, governance for responsible AI use, and enabling teams to deliver quantifiable customer value.
• Set and uphold clear technology standards, architectural guardrails, and exception processes to enhance consistency, minimize redundancy, and promote sustainable product delivery.
• Ensure technology strategy, architecture, data strategy, and AI practices align with directives from parent company Bentley Systems Inc.
• Collaborate with leadership across Product, Engineering, Security, Data, and Technology Operations to harmonize strategic technology choices, shared capabilities, and operational priorities.
• Create and maintain reference implementations, templates, and reusable components to improve delivery speed and elevate quality, security, performance, and maintainability standards.
• Promote strategic technology adoption via enablement activities such as documentation, internal training, technical forums, and clear engagement models with product teams.
• Lead and develop a high-performing technology strategy team through effective organizational design, recruitment, coaching, performance oversight, and cross-timezone collaboration.
• Measure and convey strategic impact using metrics like standards adoption, platform leverage, delivery acceleration, architectural health, and investment effectiveness to inform prioritization.

Required Qualifications and Attributes

• At least 10 years of leadership experience in software engineering roles, preferably heading architecture, platform strategy, shared services, or central engineering enablement within a global product-centric organization.
• A tertiary qualification in Software Engineering or related scientific field.
• Demonstrated expertise in software architecture, including creating widely accepted technical standards, reference architectures, and governance frameworks.
• Experience in shaping and implementing technology strategies encompassing cloud architecture, high-performance computing, platform data strategy, shared technical services, or broad engineering capabilities.
• Comprehensive understanding of how governance, shared technologies, and standards foster scalable product delivery and sustainable architectures.
• Strong knowledge of modern data platforms, high-performance computing concepts, and their role in enabling distinctive product features and scalable development.
• Practical experience deploying machine learning and generative AI in production environments, including shared service methodologies, responsible AI governance, and driving adoption.
• Advanced stakeholder management skills to influence and align senior leaders across multiple departments.
• Excellent communication abilities to clearly explain complex technical decisions to varied audiences and develop precise documentation and standards.
• Outstanding leadership and organizational design aptitude with proven success in team structuring, talent development, and nurturing inclusive, high-performing global teams.

Additional Information

• This role requires presence at the Seequent office in Christchurch for at least 3 days per week.
• Occasional Tier 3 after-hours support may be necessary.
• Flexibility with working hours is expected to coordinate across different time zones due to the global nature of the company.
• The position manages a team comprising professionals, managers, senior managers, including Leads, Principals, and Directors, and works closely with cross-functional teams to influence product development outcomes.
