Overview

The Senior Director of FX Engineering leads the strategic direction, delivery, and modernization of Scotiabank's Foreign Exchange technology platforms. This pivotal role oversees engineering for global FX trading, pricing, risk, connectivity, workflows, settlement, and reporting systems, including Murex and proprietary solutions. The position ensures alignment with business growth, regulatory mandates, and maintains operational excellence across all FX technology ecosystems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a multi-year FX engineering strategy aligned with Global Markets goals.
  • Drive modernization efforts by accelerating cloud adoption, platform engineering, automation, AI integration, and operational resilience initiatives.
  • Provide executive leadership over architecture, software development, platform engineering, site reliability engineering (SRE), and production engineering teams.
  • Maintain high availability, scalability, security, and performance of mission-critical FX trading platforms.
  • Champion engineering best practices including Agile methodologies, DevSecOps, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, observability, and software craftsmanship.
  • Collaborate with Trading, Sales, Quantitative Analysts, Risk, and Operations to deliver innovative trading solutions supporting business expansion.
  • Lead strategic technology investment planning, workforce development, vendor relationships, and budget management.
  • Implement KPIs for engineering governance, system reliability monitoring, and executive-level reporting.
  • Serve as the senior technology authority on FX architecture, trading platforms, market connectivity, risk management systems, and operational processes.
  • Ensure compliance with cybersecurity standards, audits, regulatory requirements, and operational risk controls.
  • Build, mentor, and develop high-performing engineering leadership teams globally.
  • Represent FX Engineering in senior executive committees, architecture forums, regulatory reviews, and transformation governance.
  • Integrate the Bank’s risk appetite and culture in everyday decision-making, maintaining adherence to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions, and conduct standards.
  • Promote a customer-centric culture to strengthen client relationships and leverage cross-bank resources.
  • Foster an inclusive, high-performance work environment with coaching and succession planning to attract and retain top talent.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • More than 15 years of experience in Capital Markets technology.
  • At least 10 years leading large, global engineering teams.
  • In-depth knowledge of Foreign Exchange products, workflows, and market structures.
  • Expertise with Murex and FX front-to-back office platforms.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, low-latency architectures, cloud technologies, and platform engineering.
  • Proven success in executing large-scale engineering transformation programs.
  • Excellent program and stakeholder management capabilities, with seasoned executive communication skills.
  • Experience implementing modern software engineering practices, cloud solutions, and DevSecOps.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities agilely and adapt to shifting business demands.
  • Solid business and financial insight with a focus on connecting strategic plans to measurable results.
  • Exceptional communication skills for managing diverse stakeholders, including senior leadership.
  • Demonstrated leadership in developing and sustaining high-performance teams.
  • Background in continuous improvement, operational excellence, or transformation efforts is advantageous.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office tools such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
