Job description

About IAG

IAG is the largest general insurance group in Australia and New Zealand, dedicated to making the world safer by supporting everyday Australians and New Zealanders with accessible insurance solutions and enabling their ambitions.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Senior Cloud Platform Engineer to advance the future of IAG's engineering platform. You will work across IAG’s multi-cloud environment—including AWS, GCP, and Azure—supporting insurance operations under regulatory obligations in Australia and New Zealand. The goal is to evolve our cloud platform into a self-service model with golden pathways and guardrails, focusing particularly on enhancing the GCP estate during migration from an end-of-life on-premise container platform to Cloud Run.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop self-service platform features utilizing GKE, Cloud Run, and EKS with Terraform, GitOps, and operational automation for day two activities.
  • Participate in business-as-usual platform operations by handling support requests, incidents, and continuous improvements alongside new feature delivery.
  • Enhance foundational cloud capabilities in GCP, including networking, hybrid connectivity, workload identity, secrets management, and observability.
  • Create and maintain golden-path Terraform modules enforcing standards at deployment.
  • Improve IAG’s integrated developer platform (IDP) by developing service catalogs, templates, and golden paths to boost productivity and user experience.
  • Implement platform guardrails and policy-as-code to enable rapid delivery without compromising security, reliability, and compliance.
  • Design observability and operational tools to enhance platform stability and support, valuing OpenTelemetry experience.
  • Assist in migrating workloads to Cloud Run and enhance cloud security using Wiz and CNAPP technologies.
  • Collaborate closely with strategic vendors such as Google, Wiz, and AWS, integrating into delivery teams and sharing knowledge through pairing, learning sessions, and communities of practice.
  • Influence platform strategy by providing data-informed insights and supporting governance aligned with engineering best practices.
  • Engage in a rotating on-call schedule to respond to platform incidents and contribute to post-incident reviews for reliability enhancements.

Candidate Profile

  • 3 to 5+ years of hands-on experience building cloud infrastructure with GCP and/or AWS, demonstrating strong platform and product mindset.
  • Proven skills in cloud foundational technologies such as networking, identity, observability, and security controls.
  • Competence in Infrastructure-as-Code using Terraform, Kubernetes, container technologies, GitOps, and CI/CD pipelines (especially GitHub Actions).
  • Desirable exposure to Cloud Run, OpenTelemetry, and contemporary platform engineering methodologies.
  • Confident in working with vendors and multidisciplinary teams, capable of clear and effective communication aligned with internal customers’ needs.
  • Understanding of modern software engineering principles including microservices architecture and developer workflows.
  • Self-driven with practical engineering judgment, proactive communication, and the ability to advance tasks deliberately without delay.
  • Supportive of team growth through knowledge sharing, pairing, and fostering a learning culture transitioning from vendor-led to in-house expertise.
  • Additional beneficial skills: Backstage, TypeScript, Crossplane, ArgoCD, Wiz, observability tools like New Relic and Splunk; experience with FinOps considered a plus.

Benefits and Perks

  • Enhanced KiwiSaver contributions with 4.5% employer match and complimentary life insurance.
  • Annual leave totaling 25 days (20 standard days plus 5 MyLeave days for personal priorities).
  • Flexible work arrangements including work-from-home options through the myFlex program.
  • Discounts up to 50% on personal insurance policies such as home and motor insurance.
  • Health and wellbeing allowance of $500 annually.
  • 14 weeks of paid parental leave.
  • Access to comprehensive learning platforms including LinkedIn Learning and the award-winning IAG Academy, along with study support and secondment opportunities.
  • Consideration for full-time, part-time, and job-sharing employment formats.
