Role Overview

This senior-level individual contributor position is part of the Data & AI team, responsible for maintaining and evolving three key platform surfaces from day one: the evaluation platform through which every skill is validated before deployment; the Model Context Protocol (MCP) serving layer that integrates products into existing chat clients with user-specific permissions; and the skills registry. As the sole engineer responsible for these platforms, you will fully own their implementation and operation, making critical decisions on software builds and carrying the associated risks. Strategic direction and architectural guidance are provided by the AI Engineering Lead, but implementation authority rests with you. This role does not include management duties but involves a formal 12-month performance review based on agreed criteria.

Work Scope and Impact Levels

Project sizes are measured based on the human work replaced and the scale of impact rather than coding difficulty, defined across four tiers:

• Tier A: Speeds up individual tasks where a human remains in control.
• Tier B: Fully automates complex tasks with human review of outputs.
• Tier C: Replaces entire roles by managing full workloads autonomously under governance.
• Tier D: Organizes multiple agents to operate collaboratively at an organizational scale, addressing distribution and governance challenges.

Key Objectives

• Rapidly develop and accurately deliver AI products, ensuring every skill or assistant clears evaluation gates before release.
• Collaborate with the AI Engineering Lead to build and maintain the platform backbone, including the evaluation system, skills registry, serving layer, and governance mechanisms, with full responsibility for implementation and day-to-day operation.
• Elevate the AI capabilities within the data team by crafting tools and process enhancements, enabling senior team members to propagate skills company-wide.
• Develop initial Tier B and C agent loops that automate entire tasks impacting team velocity, with a draft-and-review workflow preventing direct merges.

Typical Weekly Activities

• Focused development time enhancing platform components such as assistants, the serving layer, and evaluation systems.
• Executing and managing evaluation processes and regression tests on all skill or agent updates, ensuring quality gates are maintained.
• Monitoring production operations including telemetry reviews on usage and costs, incident analysis, and troubleshooting silent failures.
• Providing limited team enablement through tooling development and collaboration with senior multipliers to disseminate AI proficiency.
• Working closely with product and business domain experts to translate expert judgment into operational agents and workflows, focusing on platform-level infrastructure rather than one-off skills.
• Engaging in weekly architecture and prioritization meetings with the AI Engineering Lead.

Required Qualifications

• A solid engineering background with 4 to 7 years of experience in software or data system development prior to specialization in AI.
• Proficiency in Python programming, API development, SQL usage, and disciplined coding standards for dependable systems.
• Experience automating significant parts of one’s own workflow and understanding the rationale behind system designs.
• Capability to demonstrate system reliability using evidence-based methods beyond subjective confidence.
• Committed to improving colleagues' AI capabilities by building practical tools.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience deploying and managing large language models or agent-based systems in production environments, including user interaction and incident management.
• Hands-on knowledge of formal evaluation methods such as test datasets, automated scoring, and change regression testing.
• Familiarity with Snowflake Cortex components, including analyst semantic views, search, agent skills, and MCP server management, with an emphasis on rapid learning ability.
• Exposure to multi-agent or swarm orchestration, beneficial for future platform scaling.
• Experience managing AI-related operational costs, monitoring, and billing.
• Skills in observability, tracing for agents, experience across multiple cloud providers, and familiarity with dbt and productivity APIs like Slack or Google Workspace.
