School Baker

Position Overview

The School Baker at Holualoa Elementary is responsible for preparing a variety of baked goods to support the school's meal programs. This role works collaboratively with other food service staff to ensure timely preparation and delivery of baked items, maintaining quality and adhering to standardized recipes.

Key Duties

• Cooperate with food service personnel to prepare baked goods efficiently for meal service times and satellite deliveries.
• Review production records daily to determine required recipes, obtain necessary ingredients and equipment.
• Measure and mix ingredients precisely according to standardized recipes, adjusting yields mathematically to meet required serving sizes.
• Prepare mixes and bake products such as bread, rolls, buns, biscuits, muffins, pizza crusts, and similar baked goods.
• Set up serving areas, serve students and staff during meal times, and replenish supplies as needed.
• Portion and coordinate packaging of menu items for satellite meal distribution.
• Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of work and dining areas, including thorough cleaning of tools and equipment.
• Properly label, store, and dispose of leftover foods, documenting production records and notifying the Food Services Manager.
• Receive and verify supply deliveries, document temperatures, report issues, date and store goods appropriately, assist with inventory records and monthly stock counts.
• Supervise and guide cafeteria helpers or student assistants in baking, serving, and cleanup tasks; assist with training new staff and may supervise satellite school serving operations.
• Participate in staff meetings, workshops, and training programs, fulfilling USDA-mandated annual training requirements.

Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Experience:

• At least 6 months of kitchen apprenticeship or helper experience involving basic baking tasks like measuring, mixing, and shaping dough.
• One year of direct baking experience in a restaurant, hotel, hospital, school, or institutional setting producing large quantities of baked goods, showing proficiency in quantity baking techniques including recipe adjustments, ingredient knowledge, dough handling, baking times, and food safety practices.
• Experience limited to only serving, cleaning, or partial baking tasks will not meet specialized experience requirements.

Substitutions:

• An associate’s degree in food service or culinary arts with quantity baking training may replace all required experience.
• Completion of relevant technical or community college coursework in quantity baking may substitute for experience on a month-for-month basis.
• Excess specialized experience can be applied to general experience requirements proportionally.

Additional Information

The monthly salary for this position is $5,246.00. Salary includes applicable shortage and school year differentials for full-time employment.

Temporary assignments may be extended yearly based on funding and departmental needs, potentially leading to permanent positions.
