River Engineer/Analyst

About the Role

As a River Engineer/Analyst in our Christchurch Water team, you will play a vital role in helping communities across New Zealand cope with evolving river dynamics, flood hazards, and climate threats. Collaborate closely with leading experts in river management, flood resilience, and environmental stewardship to contribute to projects that enhance public safety and promote sustainable water practices.

Key Responsibilities

Your duties will include conducting investigations and feasibility analyses, performing flood and erosion risk assessments, developing hydraulic models, preparing river management plans, and producing comprehensive technical reports. As you gain experience, opportunities will arise to lead project strategies, perform technical reviews, and mentor colleagues within the team.

Engage regularly with clients and cross-functional teams, fostering trusted partnerships and ensuring projects are delivered effectively. You will also support business development efforts, expand your professional network, and collaborate across the national Water division.

Candidate Profile

• Possess a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physical Geography, Geology (with a geomorphology focus), Natural Resources Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
• Bring at least five years of professional experience in river engineering, river science, hydraulic modelling, flood risk management, or similar fields.
• Demonstrate expertise in interpreting river processes and applying this understanding to assessments, investigations, and engineering designs.
• Hold or be pursuing Chartered status (CPEng, CIWEM, or equivalent). Exhibit confidence in producing and reviewing complex models, technical plans, calculations, and reports, underpinned by strong judgment, problem-solving skills, and knowledge of applicable legislation and New Zealand standards.
• Exemplify a collaborative, client-centered communication approach with the ability to lead meetings, clearly convey technical information, and work effectively with clients, stakeholders, and multidisciplinary teams.
• Have a current, clean driver’s license and be willing to travel as necessary.
