Job Overview
The Protection Site Engineer will oversee the supervision, testing, commissioning, and upkeep of protection systems in substations, power plants, and transmission/distribution grids. This position guarantees the dependable functioning of protection schemes while ensuring adherence to standards and safe execution of onsite activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate contractor design drawings and approve designs accordingly.
- Review inspection and testing procedures, FAT/SAT formats, and method statements.
- Validate relay setting calculations for both existing and newly installed protection devices.
- Perform adequacy assessments on current and voltage transformer calculations.
- Oversee testing and commissioning of all protection equipment, ensuring protection and control philosophies are implemented per client specifications at site.
- Demonstrate expertise with protection devices from leading manufacturers including Siemens, GE (Alstom), and ABB; assist in implementing critical protection schemes such as Cable Differential/Distance, Transformer Differential & REF, Busbar Differential (both Low and High Impedance), and Reactor Differential.
- Confirm that all protection and control signals integrate correctly with substation SCADA (IEC61850) and National Control Centre (IEC104) systems.
- Supervise testing of Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) schemes for Transformer and Reactor units.
- Verify protection and control schematics comply with protection requirements.
- Troubleshoot protection and control faults within substations and propose corrective measures to clients.
- Scrutinize contractor-submitted method statements to ensure safe and reliable protection stability testing of Cable, Transformer, Reactor, and Busbar components.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Power Engineering or an equivalent qualification.
- At least 6 years of relevant experience in protection and control engineering related to substations, transmission & distribution networks, or power plants.
- Proficient in working with protection relays from Siemens, ABB, GE, Schneider, SEL, among others.
- In-depth understanding of relay coordination, fault analysis, and power system protection schemes including distance, differential, and overcurrent protection.
- Experience using testing instruments such as Omicron, Doble, and Megger.
- Comprehensive knowledge of IEC, IEEE, and local utility standards.
- Strong problem-solving capabilities along with excellent troubleshooting skills.
- Effective communication skills combined with site management expertise.
