At Hamilton City Council, our team is united by a common goal: to make Hamilton an exceptional place to live, work, and enjoy life. As one of the largest city councils in New Zealand, we proudly serve a growing, dynamic community by delivering services and projects that enhance the wellbeing of Hamilton residents on a daily basis.
You'll be part of a collaborative team that values innovation and community impact, striving to become one of New Zealand's foremost community-focused councils where every individual and contribution counts towards shaping the future of our city.
If you seek meaningful work with a supportive team and the chance to make a tangible difference, this is the place for you.
Opportunity Overview
We are seeking a seasoned Project Manager who excels at overseeing complex capital projects from their inception through to successful completion. Joining our Design and Delivery team, you will play a pivotal role in managing a diverse portfolio of capital projects, ranging from straightforward facility renewals to more challenging, high-risk assignments. Your expertise in disciplined project management, commercial insight, and collaborative stakeholder engagement will be vital to delivering results that positively influence Hamilton's future.
You will collaborate closely with technical experts, consultants, contractors, governance groups, stakeholders, and the community, skillfully balancing competing demands to ensure projects meet safety requirements, timelines, budgets, and the Council's quality standards.
While experience in HVAC, mechanical services, building systems, construction, facilities or vertical infrastructure is desirable, the core requirement is a proven track record in capital project delivery and strong project management skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead capital projects through all phases including planning, procurement, execution, and handover.
- Maintain rigorous commercial oversight to manage budgets, contracts, procurement, project risks, and market conditions beyond merely project schedules.
- Oversee financial aspects such as budgeting, forecasting, and cost control.
- Manage consultants, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams effectively.
- Convey technical, commercial, and project information clearly to diverse audiences.
- Build and sustain trusted relationships through exceptional stakeholder management.
- Prepare reports for governance and assist in informed decision-making.
- Identify and mitigate project risks, issues, and dependencies with sound risk management techniques.
- Work confidently alongside technical specialists and subject matter experts.
- Foster a collaborative, outcome-oriented approach.
Qualifications and Experience
- A tertiary qualification in a relevant field and/or formal project management certification (e.g., PMP, PRINCE2).
- Extensive experience delivering infrastructure, building, or construction projects.
- Strong commercial acumen with proven contract management capabilities.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- A proactive and solution-driven mindset with leadership demonstrated through influence.
- The ability to combine technical credibility with effective relationship building and structured project delivery focus.
Additional Information
Salary: Approximately NZD 117,000 annually, dependent on skills and experience.
Benefits Provided:
- A respected flexible working policy promoting work-life balance.
- Professional development opportunities.
- Two wellbeing days each year.
- Complimentary health insurance via Unimed, including hospital and surgery coverage, with discounted family rates.
