About the Hydrology and Hydrogeology Team

Our APAC Hydrology and Hydrogeology group, comprising over 60 specialists, is a key part of SLR Asia Pacific. We serve major clients across Mining, Built Environment, Renewables, and Infrastructure sectors. We are expanding our team with a focus on delivering technical excellence and growing client partnerships, especially across Queensland with offices in Brisbane and Townsville.

Role Summary

We are recruiting a motivated Principal Surface Water Engineer to contribute to our team under the Queensland Surface Water State Lead. This individual will lead projects involving hydrology, hydraulic modelling, and water resource management across diverse sectors. The position offers opportunities to work alongside strong multidisciplinary teams across multiple Australian cities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead delivery of surface water environmental assessments and engineering design for clients in various sectors.
  • Apply hydrologic and hydraulic modelling tools, including two-dimensional models and water balance software.
  • Guide staff in model development and prepare high-quality reports within budget and schedule.
  • Cultivate and strengthen relationships with internal teams and external clients.
  • Support business development by aiding proposal preparation, methodology formulation, and clarifying client value propositions.
  • Advise clients and project teams on best practices, providing expert technical input and commercial insights.
  • Perform high-level project reviews to ensure quality and strategic alignment.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Engineering degree or equivalent relevant tertiary qualification.
  • Registered Professional Engineer Queensland (RPEQ) certification or eligibility to achieve RPEQ registration within six months.
  • Extensive expertise in hydraulic modelling, with proficiency in two-dimensional modelling software such as TUFLOW.
  • Experience in hydrologic analysis and modelling using tools like RORB, WBNM, and XP RAFTS, with solid understanding of Australian Rainfall and Runoff guidelines.
  • Familiarity with surface water engineering topics including stormwater management, erosion & sediment control, water quality, streamflow, flood risk, and site water management.
  • Knowledge of design and assessment of water-related structures including dams, levees, and diversions.
  • Experience with MUSIC or GoldSim modelling is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Understanding of Environmental Impact Statements, amendment approvals, and applicable Queensland resources legislation is highly regarded.
  • Strong technical writing and communication capabilities.
  • Proven ability to manage project lifecycles efficiently.
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, with experience mentoring or supervising staff desired.
  • Demonstrated success in fostering and maintaining client relationships.
  • Current driver's license and excellent driving record.
