Job description
About The Team
The Adaptive Monetization team at HubSpot is responsible for managing the systems that enable how customers purchase, contract, and pay for HubSpot's products. Their systems handle critical functions such as usage metering, contract orchestration, and subscription lifecycle management for all customers. Any downtime not only disrupts user experience but also prevents customers from purchasing, resulting in immediate financial consequences.
Currently undergoing a strategic transformation, the team is shifting from a traditional SaaS subscription model to a more versatile contracting infrastructure supporting usage-based billing, commit-based pricing, and enterprise contract models. This initiative is closely monitored at the executive level and directly affects HubSpot's revenue and customer engagement.
The core team consists of about 15 engineers divided into three focused squads, with influence over around 180 engineers within the larger Fintech division.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Principal Software Engineer to architect and evolve HubSpot's monetization platform, contributing hands-on to live, high-impact systems. This position involves significant coding (70-80% of time), system design leadership, architectural review, and technical ownership of complex financial systems, alongside mentoring and strategic engagement with cross-functional teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the technical vision and architecture for transitioning from fixed subscription billing to a flexible contracting platform accommodating various pricing models.
- Create and oversee core frameworks for contract lifecycle management, usage metering, entitlement enforcement, and extensible pricing models built on HubSpot's Corex contract orchestration technology.
- Balance critical considerations among correctness, compliance, and speed in a financially sensitive system.
- Regularly write production-grade code, guide design reviews, and manage large-scale projects end-to-end, ensuring quality and timely delivery.
- Coordinate technical efforts across multiple teams within Adaptive Monetization and the broader fintech organization to harmonize development and deployment.
- Incrementally improve legacy, mission-critical systems with precision to maintain uninterrupted service and enhance system resilience and observability.
- Communicate complex technical decisions clearly to stakeholders including finance, compliance, legal, and executive leadership, aligning technical solutions with business goals.
- Influence product roadmaps by elucidating trade-offs between development speed, accuracy, and sustainable platform health.
- Mentor senior and staff engineers, foster knowledge sharing and performance excellence across the fintech engineering teams, and participate actively in recruiting top technical talent.
Desired Qualifications
- Extensive experience designing complex distributed systems that demand strict financial accuracy, such as billing infrastructure, payment processing, contract administration, or usage tracking.
- Background working at publicly traded companies or similar high-compliance environments where audit rigor and real financial impact shape software development practices.
- Proven ability to work effectively with complex, legacy software systems requiring incremental improvement rather than full rewrites.
- Exceptional communication skills enabling effective engagement with executives and non-technical stakeholders.
- A strong mentoring mindset, demonstrated by the ability to foster growth in junior engineers and teams.
- Comfort and success with ambiguity, capable of making sound decisions amid rapid system evolution and incomplete information.
- Deep expertise in backend engineering focused on financial logic, data interactions, and service contracts underpinning monetization platforms.
Compensation and Benefits
The annual cash compensation range for this role lies between €148,100 and €214,750 EUR, inclusive of base salary, potential commissions, and annual bonuses according to eligibility. Additionally, certain positions qualify for participation in HubSpot’s restricted stock unit (RSU) equity plan. Compensation packages reflect objective criteria such as skills and qualifications.
HubSpot offers a blend of flexibility and opportunity for connection. Remote workers are required to attend a regional office for onboarding and periodic in-person events aimed at building team cohesion.
Reasonable accommodations for travel or disabilities are supported upon request. HubSpot is committed to fairness, transparency, inclusion, and legal compliance throughout recruitment and employment.
