Job description
Role Overview
The Software Development Engineer for Penrose Networks at AWS will be responsible for architecting and implementing critical elements of Amazon’s innovative datacenter networking solutions. This involves creating software to enhance network visibility for various internal teams and developing systems that automate the wiring and progressive expansion of data center networks worldwide. Collaboration with Network Engineering, Data Center Operations, and diverse teams responsible for provisioning, configuration, deployment, monitoring, and scaling tools is essential.
Primary Responsibilities
- Build highly scalable software systems to automate Amazon's network infrastructure.
- Provide technical guidance to team members and identify strategic focus areas.
- Develop and evaluate software design documentation ensuring robust architecture.
- Work closely with Principal Engineers and research scholars to enable swift and seamless deployment of new network designs and products.
- Ensure operational reliability and excellence of software running in production environments.
- Enhance documentation, workflows, and tooling to continuously improve team productivity and performance.

The Penrose Networks team pioneers a next-generation datacenter networking architecture based on novel mathematical principles to deliver superior resilience, increased bandwidth, and cost efficiency over existing standards. Having validated and driven its adoption within AWS, the team continually expands the technology’s applicability across various use cases and geographies. Operating as a dynamic and innovative group, the team owns software, network, and program management duties critical to realizing this next-gen network.
Candidate Experience & Skills
- Demonstrated professional experience in software development beyond internship roles.
- Proven capabilities in designing or architecting systems emphasizing design patterns, reliability, and scalability.
- Proficiency in programming with at least one software language.
- Capacity to deliver high volumes of quality code, potentially managing output from multiple AI-assisted coding agents.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent field.
- Experience encompassing the complete software development lifecycle, including adherence to coding standards, performing code reviews, managing source control, conducting builds, testing, and operational deployment.
- Familiarity with diverse modern programming languages such as Rust, Java, and C/C++, coupled with solid knowledge of Linux operating systems.
