Job description
About AWS DMS
AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) has facilitated the migration of over 1.5 million database workloads, supporting enterprises in transferring data from commercial databases like Oracle, SQL Server, and DB2 to Amazon's open-source solutions such as Aurora and RDS (PostgreSQL, MySQL). This globally trusted service ensures customers can securely and reliably migrate critical data from on-premises infrastructure to AWS cloud services.
Role Overview
As a Software Development Engineer Level 2 on the DMS team, you will engage in developing the core replication engine implemented in C/C++. Your focus will be on the PostgreSQL, Oracle, and SQL Server endpoints, which are crucial for the service's high-volume migrations powering Aurora and RDS. Your contributions will influence migration stability, compliance with security standards, and enhance user experience during mission-critical database migrations to AWS.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, code, and implement features and fixes within the C/C++ replication engine for PostgreSQL, Oracle, and SQL Server source and target endpoints.
- Investigate and resolve intricate production issues, including task crashes, memory corruption, CDC failures, and data validation errors, using debugging tools such as core dump analysis, AddressSanitizer, and Valgrind.
- Expand automated test suites on the Scalable Test Platform (STP), creating comprehensive combinational tests covering millions of parameter variations across migration scenarios.
- Deliver time-sensitive security patches, contribute to security compliance efforts including vulnerability mitigation, credential protection, and secure software supply chains.
- Engage in code reviews, design meetings, and release management to support frequent deployment cycles impacting hundreds of thousands of active instances.
- Collaborate closely with Database Engineers to reproduce and debug customer-reported problems, translate ambiguous failures into root causes, and verify corrective actions.
- Utilize and advance AI-driven engineering tools, such as Meshclaw for automated bug fixes and Kiro for on-call assistance, to speed defect detection and resolution.
- Participate in on-call rotations to triage and resolve production incidents efficiently.
Typical Day
Your day may involve troubleshooting a widely impacting crash issue by analyzing dumps to identify concurrency bugs, implementing fixes with coordinated shutdown mechanisms, and writing automated tests to reproduce race conditions. You will also focus on timely delivery of security fixes without compromising existing functionality, review peers' code addressing edge cases, and update monitoring tools with new crash signatures.
Team Environment
The DMS engine team spans locations in Dublin, Poland, and the US, embracing ownership of complex systems and striving for continuous improvement through reducing failure rates, sealing security gaps, and elevating migration reliability. There is a strong culture of knowledge sharing, mentorship, and professional growth aimed at enhancing engineering skills and readiness for increasingly sophisticated projects. Extensive AI technologies support engineering workflows.
