Job Overview

The Principal Piping Engineer plays a crucial specialist role by analyzing complex piping issues and delivering expert solutions with minimal supervision. They lead engineering functions or projects within the piping discipline, requiring deep technical expertise and extensive industry experience.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct conceptual, FEED, and detailed piping design and analysis in line with project scope, design codes, standards, and company procedures while adhering to timelines and budgets.
• Address intricate and non-standard piping challenges drawing on extensive industry knowledge, escalating issues to management proactively.
• Compile detailed design calculations, analysis reports, and procedural documentation.
• Efficiently manage personal workload, forecast resources, and meet project objectives.
• Guide team members in problem-solving and provide innovative technical solutions.
• Interpret business problems to recommend enhanced processes, technologies, or service improvements.
• Communicate complex concepts clearly and negotiate to gain support for alternative viewpoints.
• Ensure strict compliance with health and safety protocols.
• When serving as a Lead Engineer, oversee medium to large engineering/design teams, ensuring projects meet specifications, schedules, budgets, and company standards.
• Coordinate all aspects of discipline execution including scope, deliverables, scheduling, and manpower for assigned projects.
• Define and manage interfaces and deliverables effectively.
• Monitor progress, productivity, and implement corrective actions as needed.
• Represent the discipline in meetings with clients, project teams, certifying authorities, auditors, and third parties.
• Gain full understanding of project scope, specifications, schedules, and inter-disciplinary requirements.
• Liaise with other departments and High-Value Centers to clarify scopes of work.
• Prepare Iso Curves per Project Level 3 Schedules.
• Review piping budgets; input on Project Execution Plans.
• Assign responsibilities and man-hour budgets to piping sub-disciplines ensuring completion within allocated resources.
• Support review of 3D models at various completion stages (30%, 60%, 90%).
• Contribute piping discipline insights into various schedule planning levels and review dependencies.
• Forecast discipline progress, highlight scope changes, and flag change order requirements promptly.
• Provide detailed piping man-hours, schedules, and execution plans.
• Approve design philosophies, specifications, pipe supports, standard details, material take-offs, and requisitions per project contracts.
• Monitor Key Performance Indicators and undertake corrective measures.
• Lead the piping discipline through internal and external audits.
• Assist management in evaluating piping team performance.
• Support proposal development and feasibility studies.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• 15 to 20 years' extensive experience in piping engineering within oil and gas, including Conceptual, Pre-FEED, FEED, and detailed design on major projects.
• Proven leadership experience as Lead Piping Engineer on FEED and EPC projects involving multi-office coordination.
• Comprehensive understanding of project phases including Pre-FEED, FEED, and Detailed Design.
• Expertise in design practices, applicable codes, standards, and guidelines.
• Broad familiarity with all piping sub-disciplines: design, modeling, pipe stress and support, material engineering, and MTO processes.
• Strong project coordination and execution skills.
• Well-versed in international standards such as ANSI, ASME, API, BS, NFPA, among others.
• Experience working with engineering software including SP3D, E3D, and Navisworks.
• Knowledge of both stick-built and modular construction approaches.
• Preferably a Registered Professional Engineer or member of relevant professional bodies.
• Understanding of commercial aspects and contract types in projects.
