About the Role
Xero is recruiting several Principal Engineers across Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane to join various teams. As a Principal Engineer, you will spearhead technical excellence and lead the transformation of sophisticated, distributed software platforms that support vital experiences for millions of small business users. Your role focuses on architectural design, solving large-scale engineering problems, and establishing new technical benchmarks throughout the company.
Your Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship across multiple teams, influencing strategic decisions and promoting contemporary delivery practices.
- Elevate engineering standards to maintain reliable, secure, and scalable products.
- Design, refactor, and modernize monolithic architectures into scalable, robust distributed microservices.
- Implement core CI/CD workflows, advocate for test-driven development, and establish comprehensive automated testing frameworks.
- Collaborate with AWS cloud infrastructure, C#, React, Kubernetes, and event-driven distributed systems.
- Define architectural patterns and contribute to company-wide technical standards and best practices.
Team Environment
You will be part of a collaborative engineering group consisting of cross-functional development teams, product managers, and architecture leaders working in a supportive environment that emphasizes open communication, continuous learning, and shared governance. The team closely connects high-level product strategy with hands-on technical work to deliver seamless digital solutions.

What We Seek
- Proven extensive experience in software engineering, mastering the architecture, development, and operation of complex distributed cloud applications.
- Strong background in making major system design choices and transforming monolithic applications into modular microservices.
- Expertise in modern engineering methodologies such as automated testing, continuous integration/delivery, and domain-driven design.
- Solid leadership skills with a passion for coaching and uplifting technical abilities in peers.
- Broad knowledge of modern technology stacks, cloud architectures, and containerized deployments.
- Excellent communication skills for conveying complex technical ideas effectively to technical and non-technical audiences.
