Job description

Role Overview and Impact

As a People Experience (PX/HR) Advisor, you will deliver expert, focused HR guidance on performance-related issues, ranging from informal coaching to formal performance management and disciplinary procedures. You will serve as the key specialist for performance concerns across New Zealand and Australia, ensuring Xero's processes remain fair, consistent, and compliant with legislation.

This temporary position spans six months, where you will oversee a caseload including performance challenges and Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs), while contributing to how we assist People Leaders in navigating sensitive workplace conversations.

Team and Collaboration

Situated within the global HR Advisory team, you will collaborate closely with HR Business Partners and People Leaders to handle performance matters conscientiously and uniformly. The team works across the organisation to maintain fair, people-focused performance practices aligned with local laws and regularly engages with HR Centres of Excellence to incorporate case insights into development of programs and training.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a variety of performance issues, including underperformance and related disciplinary processes such as PIPs.
  • Create and review documentation tied to performance, including formal warnings and outcome letters.
  • Provide coaching and support to People Leaders on effective performance communication techniques.
  • Analyse case data to identify trends and recommend proactive measures.

Working Location and Style

This role is based in Auckland (also options in Melbourne, Sydney, Wellington) with a hybrid work setup combining both in-office teamwork and flexible work-from-home days. Scheduled team "boost days" promote in-person connection and collaboration, while remaining days allow autonomy in work location.

Candidate Profile

  • Experience handling performance and disciplinary matters including drafting PIPs and formal action documentation.
  • Sound knowledge of employment law in New Zealand or Australia with emphasis on procedural fairness in performance management.
  • Proficient in coaching and training People Leaders on high-standard performance discussions.
  • Able to balance legal compliance, business needs, and employee wellbeing when proposing appropriate solutions.
  • Comfortable navigating complex, fast-moving matrix organizations, aligning global policies with local requirements.
  • Remains discreet and professional, managing confidential and sensitive situations with emotional intelligence.

We encourage applications even if your background doesn't perfectly align with all requirements, valuing skills, passion, and diverse perspectives to enrich our culture and team.
