Job Summary
The Principal Commissioning Engineer serves as a subject matter expert within the Commissioning discipline. Tasked with independently solving complex commissioning challenges, this role leads teams and projects to ensure safe, efficient, and effective commissioning and start-up of facilities. The engineer oversees planning, coordination, and execution while aligning with company and client objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the Commissioning Manager in planning and executing safe and efficient pre-commissioning, commissioning, start-up, and performance testing activities to meet production and contractual goals.
- Collaborate closely with project teams and clients to maintain strong working relationships.
- Oversee the preparation of commissioning deliverables from the home office for the project.
- Contribute to the development of systemization and boundary mark-ups.
- Participate in comprehensive engineering design reviews including HAZOP, P&IDs, SIL, and modeling sessions.
- Support the creation of commissioning schedules for all related phases—pre-commissioning, commissioning, and start-up.
- Supervise the development of operation manuals and procedural documentation for utility and process systems.
- Manage procurement and coordination of CSU spares, subcontracts, consumables, temporary equipment, and vendor services.
- Liaise extensively with completions, construction teams, and client personnel to monitor site inspections and testing progress.
- Lead assigned commissioning personnel, subcontractors, and client teams to perform activities safely and efficiently.
- Coordinate with the construction group to carry out mechanical completion inspections and approve systems for pre-commissioning.
- Engage in completion walk-downs and oversee punch-list creation and resolution.
- Contribute lessons learned to company databases to improve future project outcomes.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Engineering is required.
- 15 to 20 years of professional experience in oil and gas, preferably with a major contractor or consultancy.
- Strong expertise in commissioning, completions, and training, supplemented by understanding of construction and operational roles.
- Prior experience with at least three major EPC projects in chemical, refinery, or oil & gas processing industries is essential.
- Excellent communication skills for conveying technical concepts to diverse audiences.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio.
- Organizational aptitude and adaptability to multidisciplinary team requirements.
- Capability to clearly define and convey project expectations and requirements.
- Willingness and ability to travel internationally to construction sites as needed.
- Fluency in English; additional languages considered advantageous.
