Job description
Role Overview
The Manager Commissioning leads and oversees a team of professionals and supervisors within the Commissioning department. This role ensures successful team performance and adjusts departmental strategies to overcome operational and resource challenges efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead a predominantly similar-skilled team, modifying plans to tackle production or operational issues.
- Coach and motivate professional staff to achieve departmental goals.
- Be responsible for team performance and results according to the discipline.
- Reprioritize departmental objectives to align with changing resources and challenges.
- Make decisions within the framework of company policies and receive guidance from senior management.
- Allocate staffing resources for projects and proposals.
- Manage both administrative and technical aspects of the Commissioning Department.
- Identify and resolve performance deficiencies in systems, equipment, and personnel.
- Provide leadership and guidance to employees.
- Coordinate cross-disciplinary work with other teams including fabrication and construction to meet project demands.
- Deliver technical management aligned with business project goals.
- Conduct annual performance appraisals and review agency personnel evaluations.
- Manage training needs by gathering requests, assessing their validity, and facilitating training execution.
- Maintain ongoing feedback and communication within the department.
- Participate in recruitment activities and foster department team spirit.
- Identify high-potential employees and support their career development.
- Recommend salary adjustments based on company management requests.
- Assist with project execution planning and resource assignments for proposals and ongoing projects.
- Monitor project progress via Lead Engineers' updates.
- Implement Project Execution Assurance reviews and ensure corrective actions taken.
- Lead continuous improvement efforts within the department.
- Support proposal development as needed.
- Prepare or approve estimates for man-hours.
- Keep the Master Project Schedule system current.
- Develop departmental budgets and salary plans.
- Recruit staff matching forecasted workload demands.
- Provide leadership aimed at advancing staff professional growth.
- Ensure the accuracy and integrity of delivered work.
- Own enforcement and compliance of all company policies and procedures, ensuring the team understands their responsibilities.
- Guarantee timely completion of mandatory training for self and team members.
Reporting and Liaison
Reports directly to the Project Manager/Project Director and VP/Director Engineering. Collaborates closely with discipline lead engineers, project engineers and managers, construction, quality, HSSE teams, and client representatives.
Team Supervision
Supervises commissioning engineers, completions specialists, operation and maintenance experts, designers, and support personnel within the function.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering.
- At least 15 years of experience, including leadership roles in the oil and gas sector with major contractors or consultants.
- Participation in a minimum of three major oil, gas, or chemical process projects demonstrating a broad technical understanding of commissioning and start-up.
- Strong communication and presentation abilities enabling rapport with technical and non-technical staff.
- Proficiency in English, both written and spoken; additional languages advantageous.
- Excellent skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, and other engineering software.
- Highly organized with adaptability to meet the demands of diverse discipline groups.
- Willingness to relocate to different company offices as required.
