Role Overview

The Pricing Manager role involves leading the development and execution of pricing strategies related to defence, nuclear, construction, infrastructure, equipment, sustainment, support, engineering, and professional services programs. This position requires ensuring all pricing, estimating, financial modelling, and commercial proposal work complies with Defence and Government procurement rules and Commonwealth contracting regulations.

The role requires collaboration with multiple departments such as Business Development, Program Delivery, Engineering, Finance, Supply Chain, and senior leadership to create competitive, compliant, and profitable commercial proposals and manage existing contracts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct the pricing and estimating processes for strategic bids, contract renewals, and contract variations.
  • Define pricing approaches balancing competitiveness, affordability, risk, and profitability.
  • Establish pricing governance frameworks, standard methodologies, templates, and organizational best practices.
  • Lead pricing activities during bid assessments, executive approvals, and client negotiations.
  • Mentor and develop pricing and commercial staff including Pricing Officers, Commercial Analysts, and Estimators.
  • Design and assess complex pricing models for contracts across defence, nuclear, construction, infrastructure, equipment acquisition, sustainment, logistics, and engineering support.
  • Ensure pricing aligns with Defence principles and customer requirements emphasizing transparency, value, and reasonable costs.
  • Prepare detailed cost and pricing submissions incorporating direct labor, materials, subcontractor costs, indirect allocations, capital recovery, escalation, risk, and profit structures.
  • Build and maintain advanced financial models for complex contracts and conduct scenario, sensitivity, and risk analyses.
  • Lead investment business cases, analyzing profitability, cash flow, milestone payments, ROI, and lifecycle cost effects.
  • Manage pricing and commercial evaluation for Public Private Partnerships (PPPs), availability contracts, managed services, and long-term capability support programs.
  • Evaluate investment frameworks, financing, performance-based payments, and risk allocation for complex contracts.
  • Support contract negotiations related to strategic infrastructure, defence capabilities, and sovereign industrial initiatives.
  • Assist opportunity capture and qualification processes, leading pricing workstreams for major Defence tenders.
  • Coordinate inputs across project management, engineering, supply chain, and operations for proposals.
  • Review commercial assumptions and ensure all align with contractual and procurement requirements.
  • Communicate pricing strategies and bid positions clearly to executive stakeholders.
  • Serve as the key pricing contact in customer discussions, clarifications, audits, and negotiations.
  • Build strong internal and external relationships to support pricing objectives.
  • Maintain compliance with Defence procurement frameworks, Commonwealth policies, and organizational governance.
  • Keep accurate pricing documentation and audit trails; support reviews and assurance activities.
  • Identify and manage commercial risks and opportunities throughout bidding and contract execution.

Experience and Qualifications

  • At least 10 years of experience in pricing, commercial management, estimating, finance, bid or contract management within the defence sector.
  • Proven track record in supporting contracts related to defence, construction, infrastructure, equipment, sustainment, engineering, logistics, or professional services.
  • Thorough knowledge of Defence pricing principles, transparency standards, and government procurement.
  • Expertise in developing and reviewing detailed financial models and commercial business cases.
  • Experience managing pricing for large strategic bids valued over $50 million.
  • Familiarity with Public Private Partnerships and other complex commercial arrangements.
  • Strong skills in risk-adjusted pricing and lifecycle cost modelling.
  • Leadership experience in managing pricing teams or leading cross-functional bid efforts.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Finance, Accounting, Business, Economics, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Advanced financial modelling ability and high proficiency with Microsoft Excel and financial analysis tools.
  • Preferred qualifications include CPA, CA, CIMA, CFA, CPCM, or equivalent certifications.
  • Knowledge of ASDEFCON contractual frameworks and familiarity with ERP systems such as SAP, Oracle, IFS, or Costpoint.
  • Experience with Australian Defence Force contracts or Defence prime contractors is an advantage.

Additional Information

  • Position requires eligibility for AGSVA Baseline clearance, with progression to NV1 security clearance.
  • Preferred work location is Adelaide, South Australia; options for Canberra or Sydney also available.
  • Standard workweek is 40 hours.
