Overview
As an enlisted member of the Canadian Armed Forces, Postal Clerks deliver comprehensive postal services to CAF personnel and their families across military bases and installations. Their duties encompass mail handling, financial operations, and maintaining security within postal facilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage receipt, sorting, dispatch, and delivery of all mail classes.
- Operate postal tracing services to track mail.
- Ensure security of mail, post office premises, cash, postal valuables, and sensitive equipment.
- Prepare and distribute bills of lading for international and domestic mail transported via road, rail, sea, and air.
- Run a postal financial counter adhering strictly to Canada Post regulations and directives.
- Perform financial accounting and auditing tasks within military post offices.
- Type standard correspondence, forms, and documents.
- Utilize office technology such as calculators, photocopiers, computers, and postage meters.
Work Environment
Postal Clerks serve in various branches including the Royal Canadian Navy, Army, and Air Force, operating within Canada and internationally. Work settings include traditional postal offices, ships at sea, temporary field postal offices, or mobile postal vans. Regular Force members may be reassigned to different bases during their careers, whereas Primary Reserve members typically work part-time at a designated Reserve unit without mandatory relocation.
Entry and Training
No prior experience or career-specific skills are mandatory. Recruiters assist candidates in evaluating suitability based on interests and attributes. The minimum education prerequisite is completion of Grade 10 or equivalent (Secondary 4 in Quebec), with acceptance of foreign credentials.
Initial training comprises the Basic Military Qualification course at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Quebec, which emphasizes core military skills and physical fitness. Postal Clerks then undertake a six-week postal-specific training course in Trenton, Ontario, covering mail processing, safeguarding, and postal law interpretation.
