Vehicle Technician

Overview

Vehicle Technicians serve as vital members of the Canadian military, dedicating their expertise to maintaining, repairing, and overhauling land vehicles and associated equipment to keep them mission-ready. They operate within the Corps of Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, utilizing a broad skill set to ensure optimal vehicle performance.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct thorough inspections, repairs, overhauls, and modifications on diverse automotive equipment and components.
• Adjust, repair, and alter automotive systems to meet operational standards.
• Maintain powered equipment such as electrical generators and fuel-fired heating devices through repairs and adjustments.
• Utilize and upkeep a range of tools including standard garage hydraulics, mechanical and pneumatic devices, and oxyacetylene welding equipment.
• Recover various land vehicles using specialized towing trucks and tracked or wheeled recovery vehicles.
• Operate a wide variety of military vehicles, from small support vehicles to large tank transporters.
• Prepare and handle maintenance documentation such as work orders, individual time cards, and parts requisitions.
• Participate in infantry combat roles during land operations when required.

Work Environment

Vehicle Technicians confront a range of environments, from confined spaces within workshops at bases across Canada to outdoor and temporary conditions during deployments globally. Regular Force members should anticipate relocations, while Primary Reserve Force members generally work part-time with their home unit without mandatory moves, balancing military duties with civilian life.

Entry and Education Requirements

Applicants must have completed provincial requirements for Grade 10 (Secondary 4 in Quebec), including Grade 10 Applied Mathematics/Math 416 and Grade 10 Science or equivalent. Candidates holding a college diploma may be considered directly for on-the-job training contingent on academic equivalency. Foreign credentials may be accepted.

Training Programs

Initial training includes the Basic Military Qualification course at Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School, focusing on foundational military skills and physical fitness. Following this, Vehicle Technicians undergo four weeks of driver training for commercial and military vehicles up to three tons at the Canadian Forces Logistic Training Centre.

Advanced technical training spans approximately 30 weeks at the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers School, incorporating theory, demonstrations, and practical work covering internal combustion engines, vehicle systems, specialized tools, welding, and light tracked vehicles operation.

Non-Commissioned Member Subsidized Training and Education Program (NCMSTEP): This program supports candidates financially to attend diploma programs at approved Canadian colleges while integrating CAF training. Participants receive salary and benefits during training in exchange for military service commitments.

Further Career Development

Vehicle Technicians may pursue specialized and advanced courses in instructional techniques, northern terrain vehicle maintenance, ground support equipment, armoured vehicles (including bridges and recovery vehicles), and main battle tanks as their careers progress.

Reserve Force Opportunities

Part-time opportunities exist within the Primary Reserve, allowing members to train and serve while managing civilian commitments. Reserve members receive comparable training, pay proportionate to Regular Force rates, benefits, and pension eligibility, with flexibility in deployments and postings.
