Job description
Job Overview
The role focuses on leading the selection, assessment, and integration of Power Conversion Systems (PCS) specifically for Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. The incumbent ensures optimal PCS performance, grid compliance, and seamless compatibility with battery and energy management systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop strategies and system architectures for PCS, including choices between central versus string inverters and low-voltage/mid-voltage designs.
- Lead technical evaluations and select suitable bidirectional PCS inverters based on project needs by reviewing datasheets, control frameworks, and protection mechanisms.
- Drive vendor interactions and maintain technical coordination for PCS solution alignment.
- Oversee the integration of PCS with lithium-ion and lithium iron phosphate batteries, Battery Management Systems (BMS), medium voltage grids, EMS, PPC, and SCADA platforms.
- Define and standardize control architectures and communication protocols such as Modbus, IEC 61850, and OPC UA.
- Ensure compatibility of PCS with transformers, switchgear, and grid connection points by developing system architectures, single-line electrical diagrams, and interface specifications.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to optimize PCS selection, contribute to tender and RFP processes, and conduct technical evaluations during project acquisition phases.
- Ensure adherence to grid codes and standards (CEA, IGEC, IEEE, IEC), manage interconnection approvals, and lead regulatory and synchronization processes.
- Support grid studies including load flow, harmonic, short-circuit analyses, and transient response verification to validate system performance.
- Manage vendor relations including coordination with OEMs, overseeing Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), and performance validations, and contribute technical expertise during contract negotiations.
- Assist EPC and commissioning teams through stages of installation, testing, and commissioning, troubleshooting integration and performance challenges.
- Document technical specifications, design documentation, and integration manuals ensuring compliance with international standards such as IEC, IEEE, and UL.
Required Expertise
- Deep knowledge of power electronics and inverters applied to utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems.
- Expertise in power quality, harmonic management, and protection systems.
- Experience integrating renewable energy and BESS into grid networks, including medium voltage integration up to 66kV and above.
- Familiarity with plant-level control systems including EMS, SCADA, and PPC.
- Understanding of battery chemistries, especially lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) technologies.
- Working knowledge of relevant grid codes and utility regulations for energy storage systems.
- Proficiency or familiarity with simulation and analysis software tools such as ETAP, PSCAD, PSS-E, MATLAB, and Simulink.
- Strong coordination skills for stakeholder management and cross-team collaboration.
- Preferably experienced in large-scale Battery Energy Storage installations exceeding 50 MW, hybrid renewable energy and storage projects, and systems involving grid-forming inverters and operation in weak grid or islanded modes.
