Job Responsibilities
- Design fire detection and suppression systems—including clean agent, aerosol, water mist, and hybrid types—specifically for Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) containers.
- Create fire protection philosophies, develop layouts, and author technical specifications aligned with project requirements.
- Ensure designs comply with standards such as NFPA 855, UL 9540/9540A, IEC standards, and applicable local fire codes.
- Integrate fire safety systems with Building Management Systems (BMS), Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), Energy Management Systems (EMS), and other control platforms.
- Perform risk assessments like HAZOP and FMEA and devise corresponding mitigation strategies.
- Define and implement measures for gas detection, ventilation, and explosion prevention within the systems.
- Plan and manage testing schedules for all UL 9540A and LSFT testing, ensuring resources and timelines are met.
- Act as the subject matter expert and primary liaison with certification bodies and external testing labs for UL 9540A and LSFT tests.
- Coordinate logistics to guarantee timely preparation and dispatch of test units in line with testing schedules.
- Develop phased incident response plans covering early detection, isolation, suppression, system shutdown, and recovery at both product and project levels.
- Support Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), commissioning activities, emergency drills, and performance validation.
- Work collaboratively with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Engineering Procurement Contractors (EPCs), utilities, and fire authorities to secure approvals and align on procedures.
- Continuously enhance processes by adopting industry best practices and improving testing efficiency and accuracy.
- Foster cross-functional partnerships with engineering teams, product management, and regional stakeholders to maintain alignment and knowledge exchange.
Qualifications and Skills Required
- In-depth understanding of fire suppression technologies, detection systems, and safety regulations.
- Proficiency in planning incident response, managing emergency protocols, and integrating complex systems.
- Strong communication and teamwork abilities to effectively coordinate with internal and external parties.
Preferred Experience
- Hands-on experience with utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects.
- Knowledge of thermal runaway phenomena, off-gas detection, and explosion mitigation techniques.
- Familiarity with phased emergency response procedures and safety management in critical infrastructure settings.
