Role Purpose

This leadership position entails overseeing the engineering design of extensive utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) projects, both standalone and hybrid configurations with solar. The role emphasizes system sizing, power conversion system (PCS) and energy management system (EMS) selection, grid compliance, and ensuring project integration aligns with client needs and local regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Lead system-level engineering design for BESS projects from 5 MW up to 500+ MW, including standalone and solar hybrid models.
  • Perform comprehensive BESS sizing and optimize dispatch strategies according to specific applications such as frequency regulation, energy arbitrage, peak shaving, and hybrid renewable dispatch.
  • Develop and maintain technical specifications for PCS, EMS, and SCADA platforms to ensure smooth integration.
  • Prepare detailed engineering documents including single line diagrams, protection and grounding schemes, and MV/HV substation layouts and interconnections up to 220 kV.
  • Ensure all designs comply with national and international standards including CEA/BIS grid codes, IEC, IEEE, and UL.
  • Define project-specific control logics, communication protocols (Modbus, IEC 61850, DNP3), and system responses to normal and abnormal grid conditions.
  • Provide expert technical support during tendering, proposal development, grid interconnection studies, and due diligence activities with utilities and consultants.
  • Collaborate with product development teams to establish technical requirements for PCS, EMS, and battery integration responding to evolving market needs.
  • Oversee technical aspects during project execution, including design validation, FAT/SAT planning and witnessing, commissioning, and performance testing.
  • Act as the technical representative in interactions with Independent Power Producers (IPPs), utilities, regulatory agencies, and consulting engineers.
  • Build and lead a capable team of system engineers focusing on BESS sizing, grid compliance, and control systems, fostering knowledge sharing and best practices.

Required Skills and Expertise

  • Comprehensive understanding of battery storage sizing techniques and dispatch simulation.
  • Expertise in the design and integration of Power Conversion Systems and Energy Management Systems.
  • Experience in MV/HV grid interconnection design and protection coordination up to 220 kV.
  • Familiarity with SCADA system architectures and industrial communication protocols including Modbus, IEC 61850, and DNP3.
  • Proficiency with advanced simulation and modeling software such as ETAP, DigSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD, and MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Strong grasp of energy markets, grid services, and revenue models for energy storage solutions.
  • Excellent project management capabilities and the ability to coordinate technical stakeholders effectively.
  • Strong communication skills, capable of conveying technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • A passion for advancing clean energy technologies and innovation in the power sector.
