Job description
Role Overview
This position involves manual handling of packages which includes lifting, pushing, pulling, transporting, and placing parcels efficiently and safely. Package handlers may be assigned to various tasks such as loading, unloading, palletizing, scanning, weighing, quality assurance, sorting, switching, and other operational duties.
Specialized Duties
- Trainer: Educates other package handlers on loading, unloading, palletizing, and scanning methods to ensure safe and effective package flow.
- Air Package Handler: Conducts multi-step inspections to ensure that air-restricted packages are not loaded into air containers and handles related documentation.
Key Responsibilities
- Employs hand-surface methods for all package handling tasks.
- Loads and unloads packages from delivery vehicles, trailers, pallets, conveyor carts, and loading grids.
- Engages in repetitive lifting, transporting, pushing, and pulling of packages for approximately 3 to 5 hours per shift with multiple shifts possible daily.
- Reads labels, scans packages, checks numbers, and sorts packages correctly onto conveyors.
- Performs additional duties as assigned by management.
Additional Trainer Responsibilities
- Trains new package handlers in effective techniques for unloading, loading, palletizing, transporting, small object handling, switching, and non-transportable package handling.
- Provides refresher training as needed and gives feedback on proper package handling techniques.
- Reinforces safety protocols among peers and exemplifies adherence to all processes and procedures.
- Reports sorting conditions to managers to enhance operational efficiency.
- Assists in implementing new handling procedures and techniques while performing standard handling tasks concurrently.
Additional Air Handler Responsibilities
- Scans each package within the air transport consolidation zone and inspects for hazardous or ORM-D materials.
- Loads packages into unit load devices where applicable.
- Completes restricted package return notifications as required.
- Regularly performs loading, unloading, lifting, pushing, and transporting of packages.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- No specific educational requirement.
- No previous experience necessary, though six months as a package handler with FedEx Express Corporation is preferable for trainer and air handler roles.
- Must follow safety instructions and work methods diligently.
- Able to interpret numbers and information to sort packages accurately.
- Proficient in using basic tools and equipment such as roller conveyors, dock carts, handheld scanners, chutes, and unloading devices.
- Strong communication and interpersonal abilities to thrive in a fast-paced team environment.
- Valid driver's license and compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations for those operating switching equipment.
- Trainers must be capable of instructing multiple peers simultaneously.
- Air handlers must complete and maintain compliance with specific FedEx Airlift Consolidation Gateway and government-regulated indirect air carrier training, with annual recertification.
Working Conditions
- Work environments may include extremes of heat and cold.
- Exposure to very noisy settings.
- Ability to lift and transport packages weighing between 5 and 50 pounds.
- No travel required outside the worksite.
Shift Details and Pay
- Hourly rate: $20 per hour.
- Work schedule: 2 to 4 hours daily from 4:00 AM to 10:00 AM, five days a week.
- Availability on Monday, Tuesday, and Saturday is mandatory.
