Microservices Engineer

About the Role

This opportunity is with a partner company based in Ireland seeking a Microservices Engineer tasked with designing and maintaining scalable, robust back-end services leveraging Go and Python. The engineer will develop APIs and microservices that support millions of users globally and work within a broad technology ecosystem involving distributed systems, databases, DevOps, security, performance optimization, and multi-region service deployment. This is a remote-first role with occasional in-person events.

Key Responsibilities

• Create, develop, and sustain high-quality, dependable software and microservices capable of operating reliably at a large scale.
• Architect and design APIs and software systems for peer review, emphasizing maintainability and future expansion.
• Implement automated testing frameworks to ensure service reliability and validate software behavior.
• Build and manage fault-tolerant distributed applications and services.
• Contribute to API design, documentation, governance standards, and engineering best practices.
• Enhance service scalability, fault tolerance, performance, and availability across web and distributed platforms.
• Work with both relational and non-relational databases, evaluating performance and reliability trade-offs.
• Apply modern DevOps techniques including continuous integration, delivery, deployment, monitoring, tracing, and profiling.
• Troubleshoot complex technical problems by determining root causes and delivering high-quality solutions.
• Participate in proactive security measures like fuzz testing and security analysis.
• Collaborate with globally distributed teams on cross-functional technical initiatives.
• Provide technical guidance through design discussions, mentorship, documentation, and community engagement.
• Develop clear technical documentation and reusable engineering knowledge assets.
• Work remotely with planned attendance at international company events approximately twice per year.

Qualifications and Skills

• Proven software engineering experience producing maintainable, scalable modern software.
• Proficiency in Go and/or Python programming languages.
• Experience designing and managing scalable web services or microservices.
• Strong knowledge of REST API principles, architecture, and documentation.
• Familiarity with relational and NoSQL database systems.
• Experience with continuous integration and continuous delivery frameworks.
• Linux environment experience, ideally with Debian or Ubuntu.
• Solid understanding of distributed systems principles, including reliability, scalability, and fault tolerance.
• Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
• Strong problem-solving and debugging capabilities with practical engineering focus.
• Effective communication and collaboration skills across technical teams.
• Attributes such as curiosity, adaptability, accountability, and strong ownership.
• Self-driven with consistent focus on high-quality deliverables.
• A degree in Computer Science, STEM field, or equivalent professional experience.
• Additional valuable experience with container technologies like LXD, Docker, Kubernetes.
• Knowledge of build systems, toolchains, or cross-compilation is advantageous.
• Familiarity with hyperscale cloud environments is a plus.
• Experience designing and operating distributed systems is helpful.
• Background in performance engineering or application security is beneficial.
• Willingness to travel approximately twice annually for company events lasting up to two weeks.
