Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced and driven Software Engineer to join our expanding team focused on billing and pricing systems. This role entails full product ownership: crafting software, conceptualizing product features, and contributing strategically to the billing technology. Collaborating closely with product managers and UX/UI designers will be crucial in defining and shaping billing-related features.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and document core components of billing software alongside fellow engineers.
• Integrate payment and billing solutions from third-party platforms such as Stripe and Metronome.
• Create logic for metering, pricing, and rating to support usage-based and subscription billing methods.
• Ensure precise tracking and reporting of user consumption data.
• Maintain billing systems with high operational reliability and data accuracy.
• Automate recurring billing activities including reconciliation and reporting tasks.
• Collaborate with sales, finance, product, and support teams to fulfill bespoke billing needs.
• Provide technical expertise in billing discussions and strategic planning sessions.
• Promote engineering best practices by enforcing code quality, conducting architectural reviews, and maintaining thorough design documentation.
• Lead efforts to set up observability, alerting, and error management to guarantee responsiveness and availability of billing services.
• Drive incident management and root cause analysis specifically for billing issues.
• Mentor and guide other engineers to foster continuous learning and knowledge exchange.

Candidate Profile

• Proficient backend software engineer with experience focused on billing, payment, or financial systems.
• In-depth understanding of SaaS billing models covering subscriptions, usage pricing, proration, discounts, and entitlements.
• Experienced with integrating or building billing systems using third-party platforms like Stripe, Metronome, Orb, or Zuora.
• Knowledgeable in designing and managing distributed system architectures including microservices and event-driven systems.
• Skilled in SQL and data modeling suited for financial and usage data.
• Familiar with API development and integration, specifically in billing contexts.
• Strong coding ability in Go preferred; open to working with other languages and transitioning to Go.
• Adaptive and capable of thriving in a dynamic startup environment.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

Compensation and Benefits

Tailscale maintains equitable pay practices offering comprehensive compensation packages that include base salary, equity, and benefits. The salary range for this position in Canada is approximately 191,620 to 239,860 CAD annually. Benefits include:
