Senior Counsel

Overview

This role, based in Ireland and offered on behalf of a partner company, entails providing legal counsel across product, engineering, marketing, and trust & safety teams on complex issues involving product compliance, privacy, and regulatory affairs. The position encompasses guidance on content safety, consumer protection, intellectual property, privacy, data security, and digital marketing regulations, combining strategic oversight with practical legal advice. As part of a globally distributed team, you will play a vital role in shaping scalable legal and compliance frameworks for a wide range of international digital products.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide expert advice to product, engineering, and trust & safety teams concerning regulatory and industry standards on content safety, consumer rights, intellectual property, privacy, and data protection.
• Offer pragmatic legal counseling related to web hosting, site creation, content publication, ecommerce, social media, and other online services, balancing customer interests and organizational objectives.
• Serve as a subject matter expert on data privacy laws such as GDPR and CCPA and guide on digital marketing consent compliance.
• Devise and implement scalable processes for maintaining regulatory and privacy compliance documentation.
• Stay abreast of evolving global regulations and prepare the company to adapt efficiently to such changes.
• Engage with industry groups and represent the organization in regulatory and governmental forums.
• Work alongside trust & safety teams to create and oversee policies that harmonize user safety with freedom of expression within legal boundaries.
• Support the growth and scaling of the legal department as regulatory and compliance landscapes evolve.
• Collaborate cross-functionally to identify risks, develop practical legal solutions, and facilitate timely product launches.

Candidate Qualifications

• Juris Doctor degree from a US-accredited law school with over 5 years of pertinent legal experience, or equivalent qualification for an EU-qualified attorney.
• Robust understanding of legal/regulatory dilemmas impacting open source, user-generated content, web hosting, social media, ecommerce, digital advertising, and related tech business frameworks.
• Proven background advising on product, privacy, regulatory, or online safety topics within complex and evolving legal contexts.
• Familiarity with regulations including but not limited to Digital Services Act, UK and Australian Online Safety Acts, EU AI Act, GDPR, CCPA, and global age-assurance laws is highly desirable.
• Ability to deliver clear, actionable, business-friendly legal guidance enabling teams to make informed product development decisions.
• Comfort handling ambiguous situations and rendering sound recommendations amid incomplete or emergent requirements.
• Strong collaborative capabilities and capacity to operate autonomously in asynchronous environments.
• Adaptability and openness to broaden legal expertise, including potential involvement in litigation or intellectual property issues.
• Excellent communication and analytical skills, making complex legal subjects understandable for non-legal stakeholders.

Compensation & Benefits

• Competitive salary range between $180,000 and $300,000 USD, with payment adjusted to local currency based on candidate's location.
