Manager, Site Reliability Engineering - Storage Layer Service

About the Role

The Storage Layer Services (SLS) team at MongoDB is reinventing the cloud storage architecture central to the next-generation Atlas platform. This newly formed team is developing high-performance, multi-tenant distributed storage services designed to both improve current Atlas storage capabilities and boost efficiency for customer workloads.

As the Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) Manager for the SLS team, you will collaborate closely with engineering teams building these services. Your focus will be on defining service level objectives (SLOs), planning capacity, and ensuring the storage layer's reliability, durability, and operational safety. You'll lead and expand a tight-knit team of experienced SREs who are the foundational members of this organization, playing a strategic role in executing MongoDB’s multi-year cloud storage roadmap.

This position requires working from Cork as part of a hybrid work model.

Key Responsibilities

• Recruit, lead, and support a team of 6 to 8 engineers, fostering a healthy culture, facilitating career advancement, conducting performance reviews, and proactively addressing obstacles.
• Set and communicate a clear technical vision and detailed roadmap for the multi-tenant distributed storage systems, balancing strategic infrastructure goals and immediate engineering demands.
• Engage in hands-on technical contributions such as leading architectural design evaluations, reviewing code, and guiding the team through complex operational challenges.
• Serve as the main contact for the SLS SRE team, working in close partnership with other engineering leadership to maintain platform consistency and manage stakeholders’ expectations.

Qualifications and Skills

• Over 10 years in software development and managing distributed systems, with at least 2 years in engineering team leadership.
• A customer-oriented approach, considering internal developers as primary end users.
• Strong emphasis on optimizing processes and operations to improve team efficiency.
• Culture advocate for automation, preferring automated solutions over manual processes to reduce toil.
• In-depth knowledge of Kubernetes ecosystems, container technologies, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools like Terraform, Crossplane, or Operators, enabling informed technical guidance.
• Experience operating or supporting large-scale stateful storage or database systems, comfortable making decisions involving durability, consistency, and data recovery.
• Ability to convert complex business and engineering requirements into clear, phased technical plans.
• High levels of empathy, ownership, accountability, and responsibility.
• Exceptional written and verbal technical communication skills.

Additional Preferred Experience

• Expertise in leading major infrastructure transformations such as migrating legacy storage stacks to multi-tenant storage platforms, including planning and executing data and workload migrations with minimal downtime and high durability.
• Experience managing and scaling infrastructure across multiple cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).
• Designing secure, scalable multi-tenant runtime environments.
