Job Summary
The Machinist is responsible for setting up and operating various manual machines including radial drill presses, lathes, milling machines, shapers, and grinders. The role involves machining metal items such as bits, patterns, machine tools, and die parts with precision.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and operate machine tools, assemble, and fit parts to fabricate or repair metal components, mechanical devices, tools, or machinery.
- Interpret blueprints, sketches, damaged parts, or part descriptions to establish part dimensions, tolerances, machining sequence, and machine requirements.
- Plan and carry out machining tasks using manual milling machines and lathes.
- Learn and assist in repair techniques including brazing, grinding, finishing, sandblasting, materials handling, troubleshooting, and fixture/machinery repairs.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment.
- Execute additional duties and support special projects as assigned.
Qualifications and Competencies
- Ability to select, prepare, and operate machine shop equipment efficiently to produce parts within tight tolerances.
- Consistently achieve production and quality targets.
- Proficient in reading and understanding blueprints, specifications, production schedules, and safety instructions.
- Competent in using precision measuring tools such as inside and outside micrometers.
- Ability to identify parts requiring machining from disassembled components, sketches, drawings, and blueprints.
- Support troubleshooting and repairs of production fixtures and machinery.
- Basic arithmetic skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Adhere to all safety and environmental regulations and guidelines.
- Ensure tools required are available and in proper working condition.
- Communicate accurately and clearly in English.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent qualification.
- Familiarity with manufacturing environments; journeyman certification or license and forklift certification preferred.
- Knowledge of various metal types and strong measurement skills.
- A minimum of five years’ relevant experience, preferably within a similar or lean manufacturing setting.
