About the Role and Impact
Join Xero as a Lead Engineer responsible for the mobile engineering teams behind the Xero Accounting App (XAA), our flagship mobile product built on React Native and TypeScript. This role requires balancing rapid product iterations with a strong commitment to maintaining system health and rigorous engineering standards. You will contribute hands-on code, mentor your team, and enable your squad to deliver improved and quicker solutions.
Core Technologies
The essential tech stack comprises React Native and TypeScript. You must be highly proficient in both technologies, regularly authoring production-level React Native code. You will set the technical standards for your squad and work confidently across mobile and backend boundaries.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead development and delivery of impactful mobile workflows covering dashboards, notifications, tasks, insights, banking, and mobile subscription features with quality that exceeds customer expectations.
- Promote operational excellence through a "production-first" approach, automating delivery pipelines, diagnosing failure trends, leading incident management, and establishing proactive health monitoring to maintain system resilience.
- Drive React Native quality and velocity by eliminating technical debt, simplifying complex designs, optimizing app performance (reducing bundle size, startup time, improving frame rate), adopting modern methods including AI-assisted development, and enforcing TypeScript best practices.
Team Environment and Location
This hybrid role is based in Sydney or Melbourne, Australia, combining focused individual work with collaborative team interactions in modern office spaces. The team works closely with Product and Design to deliver seamless and beautiful mobile experiences, collaborating broadly with web, platform, and backend teams to ensure cross-channel consistency.
Qualifications and Expertise
- Demonstrated mastery of React Native and TypeScript with ideally over 5 years in React Native and more than 10 years in software development. You actively produce production React Native code, deeply understand the framework beyond web React concepts, identify performance bottlenecks, debug native modules, and optimize for mobile constraints.
- A mobile-first perspective considering performance budgets, battery life, memory, and mobile-specific user experience nuances, combined with a customer-centered approach to technical decisions affecting mobile users.
- Proven experience collaborating across mobile and backend boundaries with a solid grasp of API design tailored for mobile consumption, troubleshooting integration, and contributing to backend-for-frontend (BFF) or API discussions.
- Strong software design pattern expertise, capable of architecting maintainable, testable, and high-performance squad-level features.
- Excellent mentorship skills, managing multiple development streams effectively while fostering clear communication among engineers, product managers, and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience building scalable, resilient mobile applications and addressing challenges related to large user bases.
- Self-driven and adaptable, thriving in dynamic environments and able to clarify ambiguous technical directions for teams.
- Embrace of contemporary tools, AI-assisted development, and continuous learning to enhance team velocity and code quality.
