About the Role
Xero is seeking several Principal Engineers to join their teams based in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. These key technical leaders will drive technological excellence by architecting and evolving complex distributed software solutions that serve millions of small business users globally. Beyond coding, these roles involve guiding multiple teams as a mentor, influencing strategic decisions, and championing best practices to maintain product reliability, security, and scalability.
Team Environment
You will become part of a diverse, collaborative engineering community comprising cross-functional developers, product managers, and architecture leaders. The collective prioritizes open communication, continuous learning, and shared governance to align high-level product vision with hands-on technical execution, ensuring delivery of seamless digital tools.
Initial Focus Areas
- Redesigning and modernizing legacy monolithic systems into highly scalable and resilient distributed microservices.
- Implementing foundational continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) frameworks, test-driven development approaches, and comprehensive automated testing practices across multiple engineering groups.
- Utilizing technologies including AWS cloud platform, C#, React, Kubernetes, and event-driven distributed systems.
- Establishing architectural patterns and contributing to company-wide technical standards and best practices.
Work Location and Culture

Qualifications and Skills Required
- Extensive experience in software engineering with deep expertise in designing, building, and operating complex distributed cloud applications.
- Proven ability to make high-impact system design decisions and transform monolithic codebases into modular microservices.
- Mastery and practical application of modern engineering practices including automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and domain-driven design.
- Strong leadership capabilities combined with a passion for mentoring and elevating the technical skills of peers.
- Broad knowledge of modern technology stacks, cloud architecture, and container orchestration using Kubernetes.
- Excellent communication skills capable of translating complex technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
