Overview

ASB Bank is seeking a Lead Platform Engineer to pioneer platform engineering within its Payments domain. This critical role involves spearheading the evolution of infrastructure automation and championing Infrastructure as Code practices to create a resilient and scalable payment technology environment.

About the Team

The successful candidate will join the Shield Squad, a specialized platform engineering group responsible for the foundational infrastructure and operational services supporting payment systems at ASB. The team's scope includes container platforms, CI/CD pipelines, cloud infrastructure spanning Azure and AWS, observability tools, and incident management capabilities.

Role Description

This position requires acting as a technical leader who crafts and guides platform engineering strategies across the Payments function. The focus is on innovation and modernization, fostering automation frameworks, and defining reusable engineering standards rather than maintaining existing legacy systems.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Lead the progression and enhancement of Infrastructure as Code practices using Terraform.
• Establish platform engineering standards, reusable design patterns, and best practices.
• Develop automation solutions that increase operational efficiency and robustness.
• Design scalable lifecycle management and platform operation strategies.
• Collaborate with engineering leadership and stakeholders to align and influence the technical roadmap.
• Drive improvements in CI/CD tooling, deployment automation, and platform infrastructure.
• Set architectural guardrails to ensure consistency across teams.
• Identify and automate legacy operational processes to modernize workflows.
• Promote best practices in observability, monitoring, resilience, and reliability engineering.
• Mentor and uplift engineers’ platform engineering skills within the Payments community.

Desired Skills and Experience

• Extensive background in platform engineering, cloud infrastructure, or DevOps roles.
• Proven expertise with Terraform and managing infrastructure as code at scale.
• Experience designing enterprise-grade automation solutions.
• Strong knowledge of CI/CD systems, deployment automation, and contemporary development approaches.
• Practical experience in Azure cloud environments; familiarity with AWS is advantageous.
• Capacity to influence technical strategy across multiple teams or departments.
• Skill in defining engineering standards, frameworks, and platform strategies.
• Excellent stakeholder engagement and leadership abilities.
• Familiarity with container orchestration platforms and cloud-native designs.
• Experience in resilience engineering and operational best practices.
• Working knowledge of Ansible or similar infrastructure automation tools.
• Background in financial services or regulated industries is beneficial.
