Job description

Position Overview

The Wairarapa Surfacing team seeks a proactive Labourer to join Higgins, contributing hands-on efforts to maintain and construct roads that keep communities connected. This role offers a chance to develop a career in civil construction through engagement in surfacing projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with asphalt and chipseal surfacing operations.
  • Support site preparation, setup, and cleanup activities for the crew.
  • Perform general manual tasks such as shovelling, sweeping, raking, lifting, and clearing work sites.
  • Help with pothole repairs, road maintenance, and pavement restoration duties.
  • Provide support to mobile plant operations by acting as a spotter when appropriately trained and authorized.
  • Safely operate small tools and equipment following training.
  • Conduct basic pre-start inspections on small machinery and equipment.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and secure work areas.
  • Adhere to Work Plans, Job Safety and Environmental Analysis (JSEA), and supervisors' directions to ensure quality results.
  • Assist with traffic management and maintain safety in live traffic zones.
  • Contribute to environmental safeguards, spill controls, and site tidying efforts.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members and support other groups as needed.
  • Consistently follow Higgins' health, safety, and environmental protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Candidate Profile

  • Demonstrates a positive mindset, dependability, and eagerness to learn.
  • Capable of performing physically demanding laborious tasks.
  • Previous experience in surfacing, roading, civil construction, or infrastructure maintenance is advantageous but not essential.
  • Understands safe working procedures pertinent to construction and roadwork sites.
  • Able to comply with instructions and collaborate as an effective team player.
  • Holds a valid Class 1 Driver Licence (required).
  • Possessing WTR endorsements, Class 2 Licence, or small plant operation experience is beneficial.
  • Certifications like Site Safe Passport, TTM Worker/TC Basic, or First Aid are preferred.
  • Committed to maintaining high safety and quality standards.
