About Transpower and the Role
Transpower is New Zealand's national grid operator, responsible for efficiently delivering electricity from generation sites to consumers including cities, towns, and major industrial users, operating around the clock. The Application Services Group within the Information Services and Technology Division manages the portfolio of applications critical to supporting this infrastructure, focusing on seamless integration, lifecycle management, root cause diagnosis, and enhancements.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide support for vital Transmission applications that ensure continuous electricity flow across New Zealand.
- Manage incidents and problems by resolving system issues within agreed service level agreements (SLAs).
- Drive continuous improvement efforts by analyzing problems thoroughly and automating routine operational and service tasks to reduce technical debt.
- Implement minor changes, service requests, and enhancements using configuration adjustments or scripting techniques.
- Deploy application patches and upgrades, coordinating operating system patching in collaboration with infrastructure teams.
- Maintain accurate service documentation, update knowledge base resources, and assist with disaster recovery procedures when necessary.
- Perform data queries, fix data issues, analyze application performance, and contribute to improvement strategies.
- Participate in a 24/7 on-call roster as part of operational support obligations.
- Collaborate closely with solution architects, designers, technical specialists, developers, and operations personnel to define and manage change processes, transition operations, and adopt DevOps best practices including automation and monitoring.
Candidate Profile
The role requires strong communication abilities with both technical and non-technical stakeholders at all hierarchal levels, and coordination with external vendors and partners. Ideal candidates thrive in cross-functional teams, are delivery-focused, and possess a continuous improvement mindset. Practical experience in application support, incident and problem management, and familiarity with logging and monitoring tools to identify root causes are key.
Experience and Qualifications
- Approximately four years of relevant experience as an Operations Analyst, Applications Analyst, or equivalent role supporting critical 24x7 systems.
- Proven experience managing incident and problem resolution across teams within established SLAs.
- Strong ability to conduct root cause analysis leveraging technical expertise and diagnostic tools.
- Experience working with complex environments including diverse technologies, suppliers, and vendors.
- Basic understanding of IT infrastructure and application architecture.
- A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent practical experience is beneficial.
Desirable Skills
- Familiarity with Openshift and Docker container platforms.
- Experience with automation tools like Ansible.
- Knowledge of Linux (RHEL) and Windows operating systems.
- Working with Atlassian tools such as Jira and Confluence.
- Experience with Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana, and Grafana monitoring tools.
- ITIL and/or CIMS training or experience.
Additional Information
This position requires participating in a rostered 24x7 on-call support schedule. New Zealand work eligibility is mandatory. The role is based in Christchurch or Wellington, New Zealand.
