Job description

Role Overview

As integral members of the Canadian Army's Combat Arms team, Infantry Soldiers serve as the primary combat forces tasked with engaging and neutralizing the enemy. Their deployment capabilities span diverse and challenging terrains globally, including Arctic tundra, mountainous areas, jungles, and deserts. Infantry operations may involve coordination with artillery, armour units, and joint airmobile or amphibious missions.

Key Duties

  • Operate and maintain a comprehensive range of weapons such as rifles, hand grenades, various machine guns (light to heavy), and anti-tank armaments with proficiency.
  • Utilize advanced field technology encompassing communication devices, navigational systems, and night-vision surveillance equipment.
  • Conduct thorough inspections and upkeep of weaponry, vehicles, survival kits, and personal defense gear.
  • Participate actively in airborne operational practices.
  • Collaborate with support elements including tactical aircraft and artillery forces.
  • Engage in unarmed combat scenarios effectively.
  • Apply camouflage and concealment strategies, carry out patrols, assaults, defensive maneuvers, and employ escape and evasion tactics.

Working Conditions

Infantry roles predominantly involve outdoor environments replicating field conditions during training and operations. Assignments occur at Canadian battalions with potential postings nationwide and deployments globally. Regular Force soldiers may expect relocations during their career though accommodations are limited. Reserve Force members train part-time within local units, generally working evenings and weekends, with no obligatory relocation but may be deployed full-time as required.

Entry Requirements and Training

  • Applicants need not have prior work experience; recruiters assess fit based on interests and attributes.
  • Minimum education requirement is provincial Grade 10 or Secondary 4 level, recognition of foreign credentials may apply.
  • Initial training consists of Basic Military Qualification at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School, focusing on core military skills and fitness standards.
  • Subsequent Infantry training lasts 17 weeks at one of three Military Training Centres: The Royal Canadian Regiment (Ontario), Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (Alberta), or Royal 22e Régiment (Quebec).
  • Training curriculum covers weapon handling, fieldcraft, defensive construction, navigation, patrolling, and section/platoon tactics.

Advanced Skills and Career Development

Infantry Soldiers have opportunities to gain specialized qualifications such as parachuting (Basic, Jumpmaster, Instructor), mountain warfare, instructional techniques, first aid training, rappel mastery, nuclear/biological/chemical defense, urban operations, and close quarter combat instruction. Advanced leadership and tactical courses are available, including unit command roles, reconnaissance, sniper training, heavy weapon operation, and more.

Part-Time Opportunities

The Primary Reserve offers part-time Infantry positions at various locations, enabling members to combine military service with civilian life or education. Reserve Soldiers train to the same standards as Regular Forces, serving evenings and weekends, paid proportionally with benefits and pension plans. Part-time soldiers are not required to relocate unless volunteering for transfer or deployment.

Additional Information

  • Related career options include Combat Engineer, Gunner, and Armour Soldier, each with priority application processing.
