Head of Vineyard Operations

Overview

McArthur Ridge Wines is seeking a senior leader to independently manage vineyard operations across one of Central Otago's largest vineyard estates. Reporting directly to the Board Chair, this role involves overseeing production on an impressive ~175-hectare site in the Alexandra sub-region, predominantly planted with Pinot Noir alongside Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, and Rosé varieties. The distinctive Brassknocker soil and pure glacial water contribute to producing award-winning wines recognized internationally.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement the yearly viticulture schedule to consistently produce premium fruit across McArthur Ridge and neighboring managed sites.
• Lead, schedule, and mentor a multidisciplinary team comprising assistant managers, administrative personnel, and a mix of permanent, seasonal, and contract vineyard workers.
• Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and management of vineyard assets and infrastructure to ensure operational efficiency.
• Provide regular reports directly to the Board, maintaining transparency and strategic alignment.
• Manage important external partnerships, including with the water infrastructure provider and other vineyard stakeholders.
• Ensure workplace safety and adherence to compliance standards across all vineyard functions.

Required Qualifications and Experience

• Possession of a tertiary degree in viticulture, horticulture, or a closely related field.
• A minimum of five years in vineyard management, preferably at scale, demonstrating sound leadership of seasonal and contract labor teams.
• In-depth technical expertise in cool-climate viticulture, particularly with Pinot Noir, including frost management techniques.
• Proven commercial savvy including experience with budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
• Capability with vineyard technology systems, especially those related to irrigation control and monitoring.
• Certification such as ChemCert or Growsafe is preferred, or a willingness to obtain such credentials.
• A valid and clean New Zealand driver’s license.
