About the Company
Loveblock is a boutique, family-run brand committed to organic and minimal intervention practices in both vineyard cultivation and winemaking. Situated in Marlborough's Awatere Valley, the vineyards span over 100 hectares growing primarily Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir.
Role Overview
We are looking for an experienced and driven Senior Cellar Hand to be a key member of our production team. This senior position involves taking full responsibility for daily cellar activities and providing essential practical leadership to seasonal and temporary cellar staff, particularly during the busy harvest season.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead and execute daily cellar operations including juice and wine transfers, rackings, additions, and barrel management.
- Set up, operate, and clean specialized winery machinery such as grape presses, destemmers, filtration units, and pumps autonomously.
- Monitor fermentation tanks closely through sampling and carry out winemaking adjustments as instructed.
- Ensure rigorous hygiene, sanitation, and food safety standards are upheld throughout cellar and tank areas.
- Train, guide, and supervise junior cellar workers and vintage staff members.
- Support laboratory activities including sampling and basic analytical testing as needed.
Required Experience and Qualifications
- Previous experience working through a harvest or equivalent practical experience in a winery is essential.
- Experience in winery laboratory work is advantageous.
- Formal education or tertiary qualifications in winemaking or a related field are preferred.
Technical and Physical Requirements
- Competent in operating complex filtration, crushing, and pressing equipment safely and independently.
- Strong knowledge of winery hazards including manual handling, confined spaces, chemical safety, and health and safety compliance.
- Physically demanding role requiring strength to lift up to 20 kilograms, climb stairs, and work comfortably in confined areas or at heights.
Communication and Flexibility
- Effective verbal and written communication skills are vital.
- Ability to work extended hours, participate in rotating shifts and night duties during peak harvest periods with flexibility.
Minimum education
Diploma / ITI / Vocational
